I grew up in Bargoed and brought my family and in-laws back for a visit. I’d never heard of the Winding House - what a treat it was on a damp March afternoon! The Winding House machinery enticed the kids immediately - the sheer size and the fact that you are up close and can touch it etc gave them a real insight into the realities of our mining heritage. The information on the closure of local pits and the Senghenydd mining disaster was well communicated. Even better though was the West Gallery, which has a comprehensive history of the county from the Iron Age to the present day. I’ve never seen such a wealth of information communicated so effectively to kids and adults in a small local museum - this is the quality you would only expect of a top national museum or prestige CADW castle. Lots of stuff to keep the kids engaged - dressing up, wooden models, an air raid shelter and Roman armour Nice coffee shop, good facilities, an excellent selection of books and cards, and friendly staff too. Very definitely worth a visit if you are in the area - and hugely interesting for those with any connection to the Rhymney Valley.

We visited the Wizarding room as a family (11 year old children) and can honestly say it was great fun and family bonding time. It was challenging but working together we cracked it and escaped! Great activity at a great price. We will definitely be returning and would recommend to anyone!

Llancaiach Fawr

This superbly restored gentry manor house is no ordinary heritage attraction. History here is tangible. The costumed servants of the house are living and working in 1645 and allow you to share and engage in their world. Fires crackle, candles flicker and the sounds and smells of domestic life make your visit a memorable experience of the past. It takes a moment to attune your ear to the unfamiliar speech within the Manor itself, but within seconds of your warm welcome you become immersed in the time of the Civil Wars and the cares and concerns of ordinary people living in extraordinary times.

Went there on a very wet day, and, coincidentally, it was end of term, so no School parties. We were the only visitors when we were there, but the staff still went the extra mile to give us the full experience. They do re enactments, so the staff dress as servants and speak in a kind of old English that was still perfectly understandable. It is set at the time of the Civil War and the house is furnished/displayed accordingly. So it was a double delight, the house was lovely, but the role playing added an extra dimension. Really appreciated the lengths the 'servants' went to in order to enrich the experience. Also, we ate a meal in the cafe that was very nice. A great day out!

Caerphilly Castle

The fortress sprawls over a huge area making it the largest castle in Wales. Like the famous cheese, the castle has long been synonymous with Caerphilly. It dominates. Hogs the limelight. Think slumbering giant awaiting a call to arms. It's also a great backdrop for TV and film. It secured a starring role recently in the popular BBC TV series Merlin. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for specific times and days, including closures.

Caerphilly castle is simply stunning. It's a great walk for the kids, they can feed the ducks and enjoy the walk around the castle. There is an entry fee to go inside the castle but it is a must do and is very interesting. A great day out.

Had our Son’s 5th Birthday Party here. Hired out the Play Centre using the exclusive hire option. Absolutely fabulous and so much better especially when you have a large party of children. Every child had a wonderful time and even the adults were able to relax and have a cuppa knowing that the children were safe and happy. We had the cold buffet food option, tasted fresh and delicious, lots of choice too. We also hired 3 of the mascots, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Marshall from Paw Patrol, the kids loved it, each character interacted with party songs on the stage and posed for photos with the children even though my little munchkin was a bit shy. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly throughout. I would highly recomend the same options for a childrens party for anyone thinking of booking!
