Like Rome, Bamberg sits on seven hills, though these are lush, green Bavarian ones. You’ll find all sorts of architecture here, so enjoy exploring the cobbled streets. Plenty of shopping and museums await you, as do nine different breweries. The city loves markets and festivals, especially around Christmas.

From the 10th century onwards, this town became an important link with the Slav peoples, especially those of Poland and Pomerania. During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there.
This beautiful UNESCO town has managed to maintain its medieval feel which makes for a very interesting walk I through the old town. The highlight for us was the walk along the river, over the bridge to the connecting buildings, view of little Venice and the jail and on to the Cathedral. The view of the Altstadt from the river is stunning! A speciality of this town is the smokey bacon flavoured beer which is an acquired taste! A lovely town to walk and explore!

Most beautiful Rathaus I've seen in Germany so far. Walls are so nice. Also the building in front of the water. Great spot for pictures. Didn't went inside it, heard there is a porcelain collection.

This beatutiful house is on the bank of the river opposite the Altes Rathaus. It is an excellent shade of blue and the trim looks like lace. Makes for great photos.

Situated next to the cathedral these old half timber framed buildings with a cobbled courtyard is very impressive. They look beautiful with large pitch roofs and flowers along the first floor balconies. The courtyard was used for filming part of 'The Three Musketeers'. Access is free and can be combined with a visit to the cathedral and nearby New Residenz with it stunning rose garden. Only need half an hour to wander round unless the museum is visited at the same time.
