I visited last week especially to see the autumn leaves. Magnificent display of Autumn colours everywhere in the temple.

It's good to get here early as walking around the temple buildings can be done anytime and its cool to see the small army of red smock wearing cleaning ladies do their thing. Lots of mature shade trees. Historical atmosphere. At 9am, the omikuji/temple offices/souvenir shops start opening. Multiple opportunities to get Goshuin (temple stamps) so bring your Goshuin-Cho (accordian style book) or buy one there. Museum and Golden Temple(its inside a building) combined ticket is 800 yen. Tourists start showing up in droves at 10am, on Saturday. Parking lots for this attraction start at 1000 yen, but can be found for 500yen. Not many obvious places to eat in this Hiraizumi area, (we missed our turn and drove and drove, looking for food, but settled for Expressway Rest Stop) but there is a cafe within the temple complex in the thatch roof building and near the museum.

While we hiked through around the woods and into the lake, we were so close to the nature. The sweet smell of Katsura, the sound of the water flowing around and the singing of the birds were hard to described by words. The aoike was gorgeous. Definitely hire a guide when hiking around, you’ll enjoy it!

The views are nice and the trail not too difficult for all ages. The full trail can be completed in slightly over an hour (or an hour if you hurry past the photo ops). Something I wish I knew before coming was transport options and could not find an updated one in 2018. There is a Free shuttle bus from Kakunodate station (yes, they do a return leg too) at 4 times a day during 10 oct to 10 nov 2018. Timings in the picture. The visitors centre at the station will be able to advise you. (Come out of the station, its a standalone hut on the right). The visitors centre can also hold your bags for you, but if they run out of capacity, there are always lockers.

It was during a blizzard in early February and outdoor sightseeing was out of the question so we tried Kamo. This is quite an impressive complex of indoor aquaria displaying all manner of fish, plus a couple of outdoor pools with seals and sea lions. The highlight though were the jellyfish. So much to discover about these widely varying creatures, and a guided tour behind the scenes to see how they are bred and cultured. Well worth a visit.

It is a wonderful place. The coast is in front of a big grassland. There are a lot of seagulls. The grass is green in summer. It should be the best time to go there.

This is a must see park when the cherry blossoms are in bloom during April. The trees are full and magnificent. There is a lot of food and things to buy on sale during the Cherry Blossom Festival in April. The tree are lit up very beautifully at night which is very romantic and beautiful to see. Well worth a visit

This gorge + valley are so colourful in autumn. We drove there and it wasn't hard to get a parking spot. The whole valley was dotted with red, orange and yellow and very pretty. I found the autumn leaves here are more in red than other places in Tohoku Japan. (Most places we've been to are mostly yellow to orange in shade.) We hike down the valley and back up. It's really one of the highlights of our trip.
