The Palacio is stunning in every way--the Moorish arches, the frothy arabesques covering the walls, the rooftop bar with unparalleled views of the bay. It’s unfortunate that on the same property a concrete multi-story box of a hotel blocks any view you might have had of the town of Cienfuegos. But don't let that deter you from visiting the pink jewel on the Punta.

Located in the historical center of Cienfuegos, declared by the UNESCO Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity in 2005, it is one of the greatest symbols of culture and identity of that province known as the Pearl of the South. It was proclaimed a National Monument on October 10, 1978. It is considered a place of obligatory visit in the city.

We were able to visit this area of outstanding natural beauty as part of our tour of Cuba organised by Wijin Travel. One exceptional part of this was the 14km ride up to the park in two classic cars, driven by father and son. The winding road would not really have been suitable for our minibus. At the park a local guide/ranger led us through the forest pointing out interesting features, including a tocororo, the Cuban national bird, whose call we had clearly heard in the trees. There is great swimming in a natural pool below a small waterfall so be prepared for that. There are changing rooms and showers in the visitor centre if you need to freshen up afterwards. Back at the visitor centre we had a good lunch and were well entertained by the barman, an award winning cocktail maker, who put on a good show by lining up six glasses and making his speciality cocktail which was enjoyed by all!

Did the boat ride to see the flamingos. Our guide didn't speak much English but rowed us close and they were beautiful. A highlight of our trip.

Great way to spend your time without spending a lot of money. Take a pleasant lazy stroll past all of the gorgeous Gallic palaces to the peninsula. "La Punta" the park at the tip of the peninsula is a great place to grab a dink and enjoy the water, also open very late.
