Opened in 1997 amid the abundant natural beauty of the mountains of Shigaraki, Shiga prefecture. The museum was designed by architect I.M. Pei, who is renowned for works such as the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris. Is a truly amazing museum especially their collection, I do really like standing Buddha!!

This is one of the castles which still preserve their original form. Hikone Castle is designated as a national treasure, and it is absolutely worth visiting. The inside is however not gorgeous as you think. You can experience here a life of Samurai.

We were looking for a smaller place near Kyoto which would be away from the throngs of tourists at the popular sights in Kyoto and decided to take a 30 minute train ride to Omihachiman. At first the area near the station looked modern and uninviting but after talking to the lady at the tourist center by the station we were armed with a map and walked along the main street perpendicular to the station and 30 minutes later we were t the old historical district of Hachiman-bori. This was a Sunday and although there were quite a few Japanese visitors we only saw 2 other westerners. This delightful place had small streets with old wooden Japanese houses on each side, some were cafes, some were souvenir shops and some sold local specialties. We then walked by the canal where visitors could take rides on the small wooden boats. It was a beautiful area with weeping willows by the canal and well worth visiting.

You need to bring your own groves and wooly hat. There is no Rental Centre at the top of the mountain. Make sure you rent everything you need before you take the ropeway to the top. It is an easy flat walk from Omi-Takashima Station to the shrine with lots to see along the way - Omizo Castle ruins, Otomegaike Pond, rice fields and the 48 buddhas. We took lunch and picnicked at the granite picnic table near the buddhas.
