The 10 Best Things to do Good for Big Groups in Mongolia, Mongolia

October 3, 2021 Timmy Ribble

Mongolia /mɒŋˈɡoʊliə/ ( listen) (Monggol Ulus in Mongolian; Монгол Улс in Mongolian Cyrillic) is a landlocked unitary sovereign state in East Asia. Its area is roughly equivalent with the historical territory of Outer Mongolia, and that term is sometimes used to refer to the current state. It is sandwiched between China to the south and Russia to the north. Mongolia does not share a border with Kazakhstan, although only 37 kilometres (23 mi) separates them.

Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park

This national park is a must for nature lovers when traveling to Mongolia. We did a road trip from Ulaanbaatar which was a long journey with bumpy road. But the scenery and countless sights of animals such as camels, horses, goats, cattle, etc along the journey makes the whole trip well-worth it. The national park covers these areas with different beauty of natures: 1) Yol Valley - where is good for 1-3 hours of hiking to enjoy the natural gorge with some wild animals sighted, such as yaks, wild rabbits, ibex, eagles, etc 2) Khongor Els - where is the 2nd largest sand dunes in the world. Climbing the sand dunes and sitting on top of the sand dune to watch the sunset is one of the most unforgettable experiences we have during our trip. 3) Baganzag - where is also called the Flaming Cliffs as the Cliffs look like they are on fire especially during sunset. Fossils of dinosaurs were found here at this site. Minimum of 3 days to stay at this national park to complete the above-stated 3 main highlights in this region. The best way to appreciate these nature is to hire local tour guide and driver for the hassle-free experience where you can completely immerse into the wonder of natures!!!

Dauren was great in the planning of our 4 day trip and always replied swiftly to any questions I had. He took us for a very nice lunch in Ulgii, visited the museum, before heading to Sahsai where we were staying the night with the Eagle hunter’s family. They made us feel so welcome and provided us with snacks and milky tea. Then we drove to see the stone man monument nearby and had delicious homemade buuz for dinner. The next morning we left for Lake Tolboo. Our camp was right next to the lake and had a beautiful view. After a quick swim and a walk, Dauren made us some delicious shish kebabs. On the way back to Ulgii, we stopped at a ger and got to try fermented horse milk (airag) and watch the milking of the mares. This was a memorable experience for myself and my friend. Again, the nomadic family were so hospitable even though it wasn’t part of the trip and they hadn’t been expecting us. Then we had some free time in Ulgii for shopping and lunch, before Dauren collected us from our hotel to go and see Friendship Hill overlooking the whole town. We then went to a lovely Turkish restaurant for dinner. Dauren took care of everything and we were well looked after from start to end. He even made us breakfast before our flight back to UB. I will definitely be using Discover Altai for any other trips in Mongolia and highly recommend him. Thanks for showing us around your beautiful province, I look forward to returning one day.

Biggest sand dunes in Mongolia. You will experience how amazing it is to ride an enduro bike in the endless steppes of Mongolia. On the way we will stop by at Yoliin Am Canyon which is full of glacier almost all year round. This national park area is a home to many animals such as Gobi bear, the world famous argali sheep and many others. Once we reach the dunes, we spend the night in our tents right next to the sand mountains, the beginnings of the Gobi desert.

This national park is a protected area for the Przewalski’s horses that face the threat of extinction. It is approximately 2-3 hours (subject to traffic conditions) drive from Ulaanbaatar city. We reached here in the evening and the weather was cool with fresh air. We spotted many of the wild horses walking around the hillsides. Przewalski’s horses are really very beautiful animals with light brown colour on the flank and yellowish-white on the belly, muzzle and near the horseshoes. We also were able to see some wild deers silhouettes on top of the hill. The sunset at the hillside was mesmerising too! It was a fascinating and unforgettable time! A must especially for animal and nature lovers!

Although guide books say this is in Ulaanbaatar, trust me, it is not. You will need to hire a taxi (return), which is best done via your hotel and agreed up front price. It takes 1+ hours to drive there (though it's a scenic drive). The site is very impressive; although ruined (apart from 1 building) it has many ruins and several cave-like decorated meditation niches. The site is a moderately rugged walk uphill (note- no disabled access at all), but worthwhile. Lower down are various outdoor artefacts (giant cauldron, statues etc). The taxi driver will wait for you. Allow at least 2 hours for the site. I’d recommend doing this as a whole day outing.
