Fussen is steeped in over 700 years of history, from its roots as a Roman trading fort to its present-day status as a nearly secret Alpine holiday escape. Situated on the southern end of the Romantic Road, the medieval town center is framed by the majestic Alps, towering above the banks of the river Lech and surrounding lake region. Here you will discover late-gothic castles, baroque cathedrals and the oldest preserved fresco in Bavaria.

We stayed for one night prior to visiting Neuschwanstein Castle and found our stroll around the town square most enjoyable. It is a pedestrian zone and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.

The view is amazing and the walk to the bridge is a relaxing exerience. Try to find the mark that connects the 2 countries.

Pretty lake with lots of little inlets to wade or swing in (there are ropes tied to several trees around the perimeter). If you're up for a steep hike, you can take a walk over to the Austrian border for lunch or dinner. Follow the path into the town and pass the residential area. Once you cross the bridge there will be signs for Brauereigastof Schwarter Hlder where they speak English and can provide an English menu. Recommend a big beer and pretty much anything w the spaetzle!

Just a 15 minute walk from the center of Füssen. The walk is enjoyable. From our hotel, Hotel Hirsch, we cut through Old Town Füssen (1/2 the walk) and along the river until we arrived at Lechfalls. Lovely views of the man made falls and the gorge carved by the Lech river over the centuries.

From the towers and battlemnets there are spectacular views over the town and surrounding countryside, while inside a large collection of ecclesiastical art and paintings as well as the towns own collection of mainly 19th century works.
