HEART OF THE COMMUNITY, SOUL OF A CULTURE It is a gathering place, graced by weathered porch rockers that welcome you into an art gallery and gift shop rivaling New York’s finest. It is a creative educator, grounding small-town children in history and the arts while big-city kids savor a taste of country life. It is a museum that shelters yesterday’s culture of the islanders and watermen, and it is a farm that follows today’s best practices to cultivate the land. Yet it is, most of all, a storyteller, safeguarding the wisdom of our past for the sake of the Eastern Shore’s future.
We were looking for something to do on our family vacay to Cape Charles, especially with elementary school-age kids. And, not being from the Eastern Shore, we wanted to learn more about the Barrier Islands. What a well-done museum, learning center. Bravo to all involved. Sally met us & gave a quick overview of the museum, and Barrier Islands. She then told our kiddos (5; 7; 9; & 10) to wait & came back with kid-friendly guides that included searching for Hog Island sheep hidden on the 3 floors of the center. The center has an expansive & detailed collection of pictures & artifacts that tell the story of the islands. The story of the growth & demise of the islands is fascinating. I didn’t realize it was a magnet for wealthy families from the East Coast during it’s heyday. Don’t miss the 3rd floor attic, that features the very cool “Twisted Chimney”, along with displays geared to kids. If you visit the Eastern Shore, make it a point to visit. You won’t be disappointed!
