Cooper Vineyards is one of the best vineyards in Amador County, and their patriarch, Dick Cooper is famous in the area for his amazing grapes. This is a family-owned and operated place and it is likely you will run into someone from the Cooper family during your tasting. Their Italian and Rhone style wines are absolutely delicious, and their Dicembre port-style dessert wine is one of our favorites. They have great wines for every price range - if you want a real treat, splurge on the Sangiobello or Anniversary. Cooper also gives back to the community with lots of charity events and their wine club events are some of the most popular in the area.

This spectacular Sierra ski resort has a base elevation at 7,800 feet that is open for great skiing during the winter season, and great hiking trails in the summer.
While out of the way from South Lake Tahoe, would definitely recommend the trip for a full day of skiing on the weekend. Kirkwood is the most challenging out of the three on the Epic pass and is great for getting you out of your comfort zone. The terrain is definitely unique compared to Northstar and Heavenly. It is exposed, not a lot of trees or folds in the mountains, and so you can see people skiing from very far away, which makes the lifts more entertaining! Solitude lift gets crowded with intermediate skiiers as it only services blues, but the line is shorter on the Reut lift, and some of those blacks are pretty comparable to other blues on the mountain. On days when it’s not icy, my favorite run is Conestoga, off the Reut. Lower Monte Wolfe off Solitude is also not too crowded. Lifts opened with staggered times, so the back side can get crowded in the late mornings. There also are no single riders lines.

Opened in 1860 and closed in 1942, the mine unearthed $34 million in gold. Open for tours weekends March thru October.
This was a Father's Day trip for our family. Even though we have lived in Tuolumne County for years we have never visited any mines in Calaveras County. The guide was very knowledgeable and we all had a great tour. The only issue was we came on the hottest day of the year.

Black Chasm was named a National Natural Landmark in 1976 by the National Park Service for its outstanding displays of rare helictite formations. The 50-minute guided walking tour descends a series of stairs and walkways that loop around the formation covered caverns walls. Here, flowstones interspersed with stalactites, draperies and helictites compete for space above the stairways. Above ground activities: gemstone mining, nature hike, picnic tables. School program available. Open every day, year round.
This attraction is easy to get to. I would visit the website and get directions in case you do not have service, but you should be fine. There is a small parking lot in the front of the visitor center/store. They give tours on the hour. My fiance and I went on a week day around 3:00 and did not have any trouble getting tickets. The tour can last 30-45 mintues. Being that a group with small children joined at the last minute (for a total of 10 in the tour group) our tour took around 45 minutes. I would definitely recommend this hike. It can be a little chilly down there. I would recommend a light jacket or long sleeve.

They make a Sparkling Wine here that is pretty good. Good enough to buy a few bottles anyway. Their long tasting room and bar also displays their many awards from the State Fair in Sacramento and other spotlight events. We just like to go outside and look at the magnificent mountains, some miles away.

We came upon Drytown Cellars by accident because we had originally planned to head straight for the tasting rooms in downtown Sutter Creek. Luckily my wife suggested that we call in at Drytown first on our way over there. Truth be told, it's not much to look at from outside, looking more like a warehouse than a winery. There is no beautiful outdoor patio or garden setting to enjoy. However, once inside, you begin to appreciate what Drytown Cellars does have to offer, namely excellent wines at exceptionally good prices! We sat in the small tasting area watching the action in the adjacent barrel room and were entertained by our wonderful pourer, Pat, who described the wines we were tasting and regaled us with stories from his previous career in the correctional system. We spent a very pleasant hour tasting their excellent selection of red wines and even met the winemaker, Allen Kreutzer, who dropped in to chat for a minute. All considered, it was a really fun experience which I would recommend to anyone. We ended up buying several bottles of red wine and one of their delicious dessert wine called Vino de Mocca. I challenge anyone to tell me where you can find wines this good at these prices!

This fabulous winery reopened last week, by reservation only amid covid 19, and did it right! All employees in masks, guests in masks except when tasting. Plexiglass shields, a new glass used for each and every taste. Only four tasters allowed inside at a given hour. Outside, under the spacious covered patio, black table clothes were laid before outdoor tasting or picnicking began. The staff was superb as always. Thank you Stacy, Irene, Riley, and Lindsay for making our day at Terra d’ Oro a memorable during this pandemic.
