Ma Pi Leng Pass

Reviewed By blackeaglejim - Chiang Mai, Thailand

A ride from Đồng Văn to Meo Vạc on the northern rim of Hà Giang province offers the most wonderful view of an exotic karst landscape of steep limestone mountains. About halfway between the towns is the all but obligatory stop at Mã Pì Lèng, a Hmông village on a rocky slope with an amazing view of jagged, rocky peaks and a steep canyon with a narrow river running through it. There are other stunning viewpoints along the route, but this one is the best. There are a few drink stalls next to the handcraft shop on the road and a back door of the shop leads to a path a little downhill to another viewing pavilion. Sprawling on the slope, the village houses and gardens lie interspersed with dark boulders in the ground. It is typical of Hmông settlements, for they were late arrivals in Vietnam and, all the good farming land already occupied, were forced to make a living in the less favorable environments of the mountains. That they succeeded is their achievement.

Ha Giang Road Trip

I'm Ngu(Opi), I am from the Tay ethnic minority in a small commune of Ha Giang province. I’m working with 4 of my friends, who are also from the Red Dao and Hmong ethnic minorities. We are building a project about protecting culture and developing responsible tourism. Right now Ha Giang is one of the provinces that is developing the most with tourism every year, and getting more and more tourists. For that reason, our project wants to establish a connection between tourists and the local people. This will benefit both of them: The travelers will have the opportunity to discover the Northern area of Vietnam from the inside with all its traditions and way of life, and at the same time the local people get more possibilities of income. These local people are not sponsored or working with travel agencies. We chose them because we thought they were welcoming, open-minded, and motivated about sharing their culture.
