The Bicol Region, also known simply as Bicol, (Central Bicolano: Rehiyon nin Bikol/Kabikolan; Rinconada Bicol: Rehiyon ka Bikol; Filipino: Kabikulan; Spanish: Bicolandia) is a region of the Philippines, designated as Region V. Bicol comprises six provinces, four on the Bicol Peninsula mainland (the southeastern end of Luzon) – Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Sorsogon – and the offshore island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate.

The second leg of my Bicol Express trip is The province of Catanduanes, An island on the eastern seaboard of the Philippines. Its rugged coast slammed the the harsh waves of the Pacific Ocean. The island is sometimes dubbed as Batanes of Catanduanes, because of its similar features to Batanes group of islands in the Northernmost tip of the Philippines. It is also called as the Irish coast of the Philippines because of its rock cliffs that meets the ocean. Of particular interest to me is Binurong Point, in Baras, Catanduanes. Its a 30-minute hike for experienced hikers and may take a little longer depending on your physical condition. In general, its an easy trail without steep inclines. The best time to go up is at 4:30am at dawn to catch the sunrise while at the Point. This activity is for hikers, nature lovers and for those who are curious to try hiking/trekking. This will leave you feeling good and asking for more. So go on to the next hike which is more challenging, the Bote Lighthouse.mits about 2-3 hours hike. On the way to Baras from Virac, you will pass by a beautiful old church, calle Bato Church. Its made of stone without steel and concrete. You can fly from Manila straight to Virac or you can take a bus. The bus will be loaded to a ferry upon reaching the port of Tabaco, Albay and will dock at the port of San Andres or in Virac, Catanduanes. If you have more time, you can soend a day or 2 in Legazpi. If you have more time, you can also go to the Province of Sorsogon. Bus fare from Manila to Virac is from PHP 875-1300 depending on the bus line of your choice and the amenities. Ferry fare is separate. There is PHP 20 environmental fee at Binurong Point.

The highlight of our visit to Bicol was Mayan Volcano. We stayed in a hotel Casablanca suites in Legaspi that overlooked Mount Mayan and Lignon Hill. We captured great views from Lignon Hill and had fun with the zip line. I would strongly recommend a visual to Daraga Cathedral as it is an awesome church and also has great views. We visited the Caswaga ruins and rounded out our visit with a trip up the Mountain on the road to Tobaco PH. It is not well marked so you will need to be observant. The windy road is several kilometers long but well worth the vistas of the shoreline and mountain though you will probably be in the clouds and not see the top.

I was a bit hesitant to visit and include this place in my must-see destinations in Albay due to its far off location in Legazpi and the weather during this month. But having heard from the people in Legazpi that we should see this place, my friends are excited to check this out. If you are a backpacker, from Tabaco tricycle terminal, ride a trike going to Quinastillohan and tell the driver to drop you off at the junction going to Vera Falls. It's a 30 mins ride and then you will ride a habal-habal/motorcycle for about 30-45 mins. You will see the Mayon Volcano going here if it is a clear weather. The road is surprisingly paved and at the end of the straight road is like a dead end but the downstairs will take you to Vera falls. There is mini carinderia and a store for BBQ or some light snack and comfort rooms. Entrance fee is 10 pesos. Huts can range from 250-450 pesos. The water is cold and refreshing. There are deep parts near the falls and more shallow parts. It is really enchanting and I hope that the people will be able to preserve this piece of nature. I hate seeing this place being ruined due to garbage, some I've noticed behind the big rocks.

The beauty of the Mayon Volcano can be seen all around the cities and towns around its fringes. Usually to appreciate its beauty up close is to take a trek that would take hours. Today, a more thrilling option is to ride an ATV towards the lava front. Ride away to the LAVA Wall on an all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) along the fringes of the World's most perfect coned volcano, the Mount Mayon.

A beautiful beach, almost 35 minutes boat “Bangka” ride from the Tugawe cove resort where we stayed. And, 5 minutes boat ride from Lahos Island. A lush green small island with two white sand beaches. The sand is fine like powder. Very smooth. Not a good snorkelling point though, good for swimming. One can take very good photographs for remembrance. A must to see on Caramoan island hopping spree.
