Rice & Friends Chinese cooking school offers hands-on Chinese cooking courses with English instruction in a beautiful open-air setup with mountain views. It is a very authentic and personal 5-hour cooking experience, including outdoor-market shopping for ingredients, introduction to the theory of Chinese cooking, hands-on preparation of 3 dishes with a recipe booklet to take away and plenty of time for everybody to sit down together and enjoy the meal they cooked themselves. The receipes has been tested overseas and specially designed in order to make sure you can still get all the ingredients for those dishes when you are back home.
Luxi is an amazing person, full of knowledge of food and chinese culture. She speaks perfect english and communication among us was great. Our was not just a cooking class but a journey thru local flavours and chinese history. I really reccomend taking this class (we did the "classic three chinese dishes" class) as this was our hilight in Dali. Marco

Oct 16 After a quick visit to Jade Dragon Snow Mt, Blue Moon Valley and Lake, we saw the afternoon Lijiang Impression Show performance. Although we arrived about 10 min late, we were able to squeeze seats at different spots. Then we went to Baisha Ancient Town and stopped at the Baisha Naxi Embroidery Institute along the main street. In the front room we viewed novices and experienced artisans producing hand-made objects d'art. Then a salesperson took us into the gallery and showed finished works. I looked at several and bought a beautiful grouping of colorful koi fish in a circle embroidery that took 1 month to finish. I paid 500 RMB. I plan to show it in the house.

We are China's first fully licensed craft brewery located at the foot of the Shangri-La mountain range. In cooperation with Swiss and German beer experts, our beer is still brewed using traditional and manual methods, with special focus placed on the use of pristine resources. Our prime brewing ingredients are all local, including highland barley and alpine spring water.

This was an optional activity on our first day of tour in China. The whole show is superb, beautifully choreographed and well executed. All actors are amateurs drawn from the nearby villages and the youngest is five years old. The whole show is a superb exposition of the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Yunan Province. The whole show is a combination of traditional and folk art representing the various ethnic communities in the. province. It tells the story of their beliefs, view of the world and living; divinity, earth, sky, moon. There are fabulous dances with amazing costumes. The show starts with the drums; The Dawn of Life, followed by act one, representing the Sun, again drums by different communities. Act two is earth represented by dance by different communities. Act three is representation of homeland by Yi minority group. Act four is pilgrimage mainly Tibetan. Final is the Spirit of Peacock dance. The show lasts 90 minutes. You wouldn't realise the passing of the time. You are allowed to take pictures without flash but no video recording allowed. But you will be too mesmerised to remember to take photos.

Who We Are The YMHC Shangrila Handicraft Center is a community based organization founded to support local cultural heritage, handicrafts and eco-tourism in Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan. The fragile eco-system of small villages, highland wetlands, and snowcapped mountains is home to 250,000 Tibetans. Most of the population lives in mountain villages. Their traditional livelihood includes agriculture, herding yak and sheep, craft production and harvesting and selling herbs and mushrooms from the nearby forests. The region was once part of the tea-horse caravan trade route stretching from Yunnan, Burma, and India to Tibet. It is home to a colorful legacy of Tibetan hand crafted wooden implements, leather goods, decorative architectural detail, pottery, silver jewelry, Tangkas, weaving and carpet making. Many of these products gained fame on this ancient trade transit corridor. Our mission is to support this community of artisans, students, and friends to popularize local tradition and culture as tourism grows and to encourage heritage crafts and lifestyle based business so that this the flavor of the Tibetan highlands in this corner of Yunnan can become a prominent feature of the tourist markets. What We Do YMHC Handicraft Store opened in 2006 in the heart of the Old Town of Shangrila features iconic crafts from Nixi potters, Benzilan wood carvers, Naxi Dongba paper makers, weavers in the Shangrila valley and local silversmiths. We help the artisans network into larger markets and buyers outside the area. It is open to the public and contains Chinese, English and Tibetan volumes. English Conversation classes are offered free of charge to students and entrepreneurs throughout the year. We organize free lectures and workshops to the community on a variety of topics including health care, developing business skills, beekeeping, marketing and branding, tourism development and Tangka Painting Beekeeping as Family-based Micro Enterprise: Training farmers in bee keeping provides a new source of income in the villages.
