Hugging the German border, Western Poland is made up of the West Pomeranian, Lubusz and Lower Silesian Voivodships (Provinces), the largest cities of which are Szczecin, Gorzow Wielkopolski and Wroclaw respectively. Both Szczecin and Wroclaw are beautiful medieval cities with many popular attractions. Drawno National Park, part of the massive Drawska Forest, lies at the convergence of West Pomerania, Lubusz and Greater Poland. Lubusz is also home to the bird-filled Ujscie Warty National Park.

A stunning building, rebuilt post-war after the then German city of Stettin was heavily bombed in 1944. The interior is incredibly lofty and so large that an ordinary camera simply can't catch its immensity. Access is available for a requested charge of 2 Euros or 8 Zloty (Sep 2019), a bargain for the experience. Access to the tower is also available for a supplementary fee. Whether you have religious leanings or not, understand the Polish language or not, listening to a sung Eucharist is an extraordinary experience.

The new seat of the Szczecin Philharmonic was erected at the junction of two streets, Małopolska and Matejki, at the plot where 130 years ago the Concert House (Konzerthaus) commenced its activity. Since 1884 it served as city’s musical center. The building was severely damaged during warfare, and in 1962 it was finally pulled down. The new facility, in line with the intention of its authors, is based on respecting the surroundings and history of the location, co-creating a friendly urban space and at the same time intriguing everyone with bold solutions and original shape of building’s body. According to the intention of the designers, the building reflects the musical order and construction of the instrument whose physical structure becomes filled with life and sounds. For the first time the building of the Philharmonic in Szczecin filled with music in September 2014. This is the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Szczecin’s music experience.
