One of the city's most ornate structures, this church is lavishly endowed with gold.
I was approached by a kind man who asked if I wanted a tour as I was heading inside to look around. He spoke several different languages, and was incredibly knowledgeable, reciting the names of the saints depicted, the dates of each stage of building this beautiful church, and the historical significance of the church itself. It was a pleasure to learn more of this history. I am very grateful!

Since then the gallery has had over 40 exhibitions showcasing artist from Mexico and around the world. The gallery is the only full time cultural space dedicated to the plastic artist in San Cristobal.

Arteria is a new reality in the artistic field; joining the functions of a traditional art gallery with a space dedicated to the continuous achievement of educational projects. Our focus is directed towards the constant search for artistic creativity and possibilities. Our Mission at Arteria is to collaborate with artists and local communities to promote, diffuse, and share the arts to enhance understanding, build communities, and empower lives.
One visit to this colorful San Cristobol art hub is not enough. There is a lot to see. I returned several times! And, it's an enjoyable place to visit. The store/gallery is often bustling with activity as local and regional Mexican artists hang their work, pick up commissions, or stop in for a chat. If you arrive during these times, chances are you'll be swept up in the conversation and invited to meet the artists. If you enjoy Mexican art, check out Arteria. There are items for sale at every price point. Don't miss las piedras in the back. This is a terrific store with a dedicated, English-speaking staff.

Steps is a story museum and a NGO, recording the stories and culture of indigenous and help local children with basic education. Here we also offer different events for people to know more about real indigenous culture: 1. Cooking Workshop, workshop of traditional indigenous cuisine everyday at 11:00 AM, to learn how to make tortillas, quesadillas and pozol in community-style, from scratch (day menu, 150 MXN) 2. Story Time, to know more about indigenous culture, legend, lifestyle and ceremony, everyday at 15:00 pm in english and 17:00 pm in spanish. (on donation) 3. Cooking Workshop, workshop of traditional indigenous cuisine everyday at 19:00 PM, to learn how to make tamales, ponche (an indigenous cocktail) and sauce in community-style, from scratch. (night menu, 250 MXN) All the donation we receive directly go to the community to help indigenous children.
Had the honour of attending both story time and the cooking class here. Story time with Ivan (run by donation only, we donated 100 pesos per person as it lasted nearly three amazing hours) was an incredible experience- a chance to chat one on one (well there was four of us in the group) with a Mexican which spoke honestly and candidly about the traditions, rituals, trials and tribulations of the Mexican people and indiginous communities. The cooking class with Laura carried on in a similar vein, with education more focused on the food traditions, cooking techniques and stories from history. We made sweet and savory tamales, a Mexican salsa/ sauce to accompany and a hot fruit punch. We were also given a glass of POX to toast our meal with. This was around three and a half hours and is billed at 200 pesos per person but we tipped an additional 50 as its such an amazing personal experience. All the money raised from both story time and the cooking classes goes to the projects Steps helps run within the indiginous communities, so it felt good to put your money there. If going, I'd recommend you chdck out the church of Chemal first- alot of the stories are based on this experience. Absolutely amazing- the reason you go travelling is for experiences like Steps provided.

Enzue Open Art Studio is an exquisite gallery and workshop! During my stay in San Cristóbal I had the opportunity to take their 3 day linocut for beginners class. Husband and wife, Fernando and Enzue have a beautiful way of seeing the world that is woven into the way they teach their classes. This class taught me to enjoy the process of creating, rather than creating to achieve a final outcome. In the three day workshop you get to work outside in a beautiful courtyard, listen to great music, sip excellent tea/coffee and learn the steps of linocut to create your very own piece of art. This experience has definitely been one of the highlights of my trip! Laurelle

Sweet Retreats are vacation style intensive training retreats focused on circus fitness, creativity, and healthy lifestyle. Sweet Retreats are a way to bridge the gap between intensive training, healthy lifestyle choices, and beach get-a-ways. We are a small, family run, family friendly business offering welcoming experiences for various skill levels. Sweet Retreats are held at Casa Chango Mexico.
When it looked like the world was going to shut down, I asked myself: What would I need to be happy and content? My answer: Good company, good food, to feel safe, and of course, aerials. Here at the Sweet Retreats Artists Residency I get all of that and more! I am surrounded by some of the most supportive and open people I have ever met. Here, I can truly be myself—I can share my hopes and fears, I can laugh and cry, and am totally accepted for who I am. Kerri and Stuart create a supportive family environment that makes me feel totally at home. I have developed friendships that will last well beyond the time I spend here. If I was at home in lockdown (or even pre-covid!), I would be eating vaguely healthily with a lot of sugary snacks and alcohol. Here, Yaz and Stuart make delicious healthy meals every day, which we mostly eat together around the pool. Snacks are fresh mangoes and most of my alcohol consumption has been replaced by fresh juices... except on the weekend when some of us will have a few drinks together. Many people thought I was crazy to go to Mexico in a time of crisis, however I feel far safer here than I would back home. We don’t have to go to the shop or come into contact with people outside of our Sweet Retreats bubble. I don’t have to trust that other people are safe, because we are all in agreement with being careful, and we all socially distance when there is a new arrival to be extra careful. I feel safe and cared for. And aerials. My main driving force to get here—I knew without aerials I would struggle physically and mentally in lockdown. Here, we have classes most days, focusing on skills and artistry. Kerri is the most amazing coach—She encourages everyone to live in their own body, and recognises the strengths and limitations of each person, with no judgement, and a clear focus of how to help you meet your goals. Teaching here is not one-size-fits-all: Kerri tailors training to the individual. I have already made so much progress in my aerial practice: I feel confident in exploring new pathways and movements with my body I am developing a sense of musicality and performance I am starting to break bad habits feel as though I am on the pathway to becoming an artist . In short: if you want to feel safe, spend time with some incredible individuals you can call family, if you want fresh and amazing food and to take your aerial training to the next level (whatever that level is!), come to Casa Chango for the Sweet Retreats Artists Residency.
