Holmasaig Gallery

Reviewed By Dileas12

Margarita has opened again and it was a delight to make an appointment to view her huge range of work; there really is something for everyone here, and our teenage son was impressed with the variety of media, subject and style. She is charming and her gallery is intimate and cosy. We bought a Japanese woodcut of St Kilda. We’ll treasure it.

Barra Island Tours

Let Rob or Paul take you to see Barra’s unique tiny airport, where the plane lands on Traigh Mhor (Big Beach). Barra airport is the only one in the world to have scheduled flights landing on a beach, so even if you have flown in it's a sight well worth seeing. See the abandoned village at Balnabodach, and take in the beautiful scenery and wild life that makes Barra what it is.

The Mission House Studio

Welcome to The Mission House Studio, the studioand gallery of Beka Globe - Photographer and Nickolai Globe - Ceramic Artist. In the studio, overlooking the desolate and stunning rocky landscape of Harris, Beka’s stark photographs float off the stone walls, suspended by high tensile wires. Nickolai’s ceramics range from functional stoneware to abstract sculptural work. They are displayed on furniture, fashioned from the old timbers and reclaimed materials from the Church conversion. Music reverberates through the space. The photographic work of Beka Globe, a traditionally trained photographer, captures the both the subtle and harsh elements of the Hebridean landscape. Finding an emotive vastness, depth and simplicity, her silent images are moving, stirring a particular sense of place. The ceramic works of Nickolai Globe are influenced directly by the environment of the rugged North West. Drawing from elements of Zen and the unpredictable, his work reflects rather than emulates nature.

An Lanntair Gallery

Reviewed By JillG411 - London, United Kingdom

This may only be a small museum, but I loved all the activities and films that went alongside the displays. All of Harris and Lewis life was represented here, from films in Gaelic to exhibits on tradtional jobs and crafts. Local people had been interviewed on different aspects of culture in the Outer Hebrides and their responses were shown in film clips, which I found fascinating. I loved the film explanation of the Lewis chessmen and the exhibit of some chessmen. I have decided to go to the British Museum and see some more of them based on this visit! There was a game about trying to work out what the Gaelic placename was in English to help the postman deliver his letters- good for the young and not so young! The exhibitions are housed in a modern, airy building with a long corridor showing views of the sea - and a coffee shop to recover from the showers. All in all, a very pleasant visit.
