The 10 Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Bangor, Maine (ME)

March 26, 2022 Mollie Coke

The city of Bangor is perhaps most well known as the setting for many of Stephen King's stories, a reputation that has led to the nickname Transylmainia. There is more to Bangor than just tales of horror, however. There is a thriving arts scene, with museums, galleries, theaters, a symphony orchestra and a popular sidewalk art festival every summer. The area around Bangor includes the coastal Acadia National Park and the wooded Baxter State Park, providing plenty of outdoor adventure.

Bangor Escape Rooms

Reviewed By 543angelicae

My husband and I just completed two of the rooms at Bangor Escape Rooms - Quest for the King’s Crown and the Game Museum. Let me preface this review by saying that we have each done 50+ In-person rooms, plus a handful of virtual rooms during the pandemic. These were the first in person rooms that we’ve done in nearly 14 months, so we were excited to shake off the cobwebs a bit. We started with the Quest room and it was very well done. Pretty immersive, a good variety of puzzles, and overall flowed well from element to element. There were some puzzles that we hadn’t seen before, which is very difficult given the number of rooms we have done. Fantastic room for first timers. That being said - it was only two of us and we got out with ~25 minutes to spare. Veterans may want to look to some of the other rooms for more of a challenge, or go in knowing that this is a solid but limited experience and just have a good time. We personally had such a good time with that room and the host, DJ, was so welcoming that we asked if we could book another room - Game Museum - on site. He did warn us that it was their hardest room, but still we wanted to at least see it even if we didn’t get out. This is a very unique room. I don’t want to spoil anything, but would highly recommend for newbies or veteran escapers alike. Certainly doable by two people, but we would have benefited from 1 or 2 additional set of hands because there’s so much to do in this one. We escaped, but only after an additional 5 minutes on the clock. In general, I think some of the elements of both games could be replaced (some props/clues with paint that had worn off, some laminated cards that might be in need of a refresh, etc.) but nothing that really detracted from the game play. In speaking with DJ, it’s clear that he and his partner just purchased the space a few months ago and are very passionate about escape rooms. I’m excited to see everything that Bangor Escape Rooms has to offer in the future, and wouldn’t hesitate to repeat the 2 hour drive to visit again.

A "must see" bookstore for any Steven King fan. Loads of first edition books, Tee shirts, hoodies, memorabilia, signed books, posters -- and the proprietor is knowledgable and helpful. We had a blast in this book store and wound up buying much more than we thought we would. Even the quality of the tee shirts is great! You have to see this place for yourself to truly appreciate it. Hard to find because there's not much of a sign outside. Like a hidden treasure.

Always a new experience with varied things to look at from stationery, journals, and cards, to jewelry rendered in different stones. Although the name is Rock and Art the shop includes lotions and potions and an array of plants. The air plants are always a marvel and at Christmas tree decorations, are available. A miniature terrarium. I have kept them in the pots of other plants. The shop includes linens, kitchen items, and always has a gallery of local artists updated.
