Newstead Abbey

Originally built in 1164 as an Augustinian priory, this became the ancestral home of poet Lord Byron.

Not so long ago I moved to Ravenshead Village and to my delight, literally on the door step, I have the most beautiful place to go to for my daily walks with my dog. I fell in love with this magical place with amazing sunrise and sunsets, noisy and curious peacocks, Canadian Geese, Swans, beautiful waterfalls, lakes and ponds and the most amazing gardens! I don’t know any gardener personally to say a big thank you for keeping the Abbey grounds so beautiful, but their hard work definitely shows and is highly appreciated ! By pure chance I came across on Instagram to one of the gardeners page adavison.gardener and I’ll take a chance to say Thank you , you doing really great job! I highly recommend Newstead Abbey for a simple stroll around beautiful grounds, for walk with dogs, for tranquility and meditation in Japanese Garden, for bird listening and watching, photography, picnics, running , cycling and much much more ! 10/10!!!!

Just spent 2 days there, with an overnight at a lovely nearby hotel. Absolutely magic - great staff and the best facilities I've come across. The pool suite is brilliant, lovely sauna, steam room, caldarium, tropical showers and the wonderful mineral-salted pool. Other guests behave too. Spent a day there a few months ago too and had the same consistent experience. Recommend the excellent value afternoon tea.

Friday 29 November 19, my friend and I visited historic Rufford Abbey. It was a really cold wintery day with a lovely winter sun. In 1146 Gilbert de Gaunt, Earl of Lincoln, founded the Cistercian abbey of St Mary the Virgin. The monks of this order, also known as the ‘white monks’ because of their habits of undyed wool, believed in the value of an austere life based upon prayer and hard work. Rufford Abbey was moderately wealthy and able to sustain a community of monks between its completion in about 1170 and its suppression in 1536. Rufford was one of the first abbeys in England to be affected by the Suppression of the Monasteries, and the whole estate was quickly acquired by George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury. The conversion of the west range of monastic buildings into a house (1560–90) was undertaken by the sixth earl, who was the fourth and final husband of the indomitable Bess of Hardwick, from whom he was then bitterly estranged. In 1610, a new projecting wing was added to the northern end of this range. The estate was inherited in 1626 by Mary Talbot, sister of the 7th and 8h Earls of Shrewsbury, and it passed to her husband, George Savile. William Savile, George’s successor, made Rufford Abbey the seat of the Savile family after he burnt down the Saviles’ original home in order to prevent its being occupied by a Parliamentarian garrison during the Civil War. In 1679, the Savile family constructed a new north wing on the site of the abbey church, containing reception rooms and a long gallery. They also built the large stable block to the right of the house. The surviving roofed southern service wing (currently used as offices) was also added by the Saviles in the 17th century. In 1938, the 3rd Baron Savile inherited the Rufford estate as a minor, but his trustees split it into lots and sold it off. In the 20th Century the abbey and park were bought by Nottinghamshire County Council in 1952, and the north and east wings were demolished in 1956. The remaining west range and south service wing were put into the care of the Ministry of Works at the same date. My friend and I walked round this lovely abbey and then we strolled through the lovely sculpture gardens and took some wonderful photographs. I even found inspiration here for I wrote a poem call 'The Rose In Winter'. My friend and I then looked round the lovely Xmas Craft Shops and I purchased some 'Foxy' Xmas tree decorations, some Xmas cards and a classic book 'Cider With Rosie'. Afterwards, My friend and I then visited 'The Coach House' Café, where we had hot fish finger butties and a latte for me and tea for my friend. We spent a nice hour here getting warm after our lovely walk round the abbey and grounds. If you want a lovely place to visit or walk at any time of the year, then Rufford Abbey is a must.

Hodsock Priory

Hodsock Priory is a wedding venue on a private estate surrounded by North Nottinghamshire countryside and easily accessible from the A1 and M1 at Blyth. Nationally famous for its winter garden and displays of snowdrops - open in February only each year. Wrap up warm and enjoy a walk in the woods then have a cup of tea a slice of home-made cake by the bonfire.

We came across Hodsock when looking for a venue for our wedding and decided it was the place for us. After a few conversations we agreed a date. Shortly afterwards we were invited to an afternoon to taste a number of the menu offerings which further reinforced we had made the right choice. In the 6 or so months we had to arrange things there wasn’t a need for hugely regular communication with the Hodsock team but when we needed them they were there. As the date drew closer there were little things that came up on our list that were no trouble for the team to accommodate. The big day arrived and family and friends staying at the Priory arrived early and Hodsock agreed that we could provide a small buffet to keep them going. Vicki was on hand to discreetly deal with a slightly lost and delayed cake ( crisis averted ) Our guests were all hugely impressed with setup and how well things ran. There’s a fine line between being there when needed whilst not being overbearing and in the way - the team managed this with aplomb. When it came to the food there were a few last minute (guest requested ) swaps which were dealt with without issue. All in all we had an absolutely fabulous day which was of course down to having many of our friends and family there to celebrate with us but also down to the excellent service we received. The day went far too quickly but we have loads of special memories. The following morning our guests staying at the Priory joined us for breakfast and what a breakfast it was - complimented by all. Just one small request on behalf of us poor unpracticed individuals who need to help getting the wedding dress off at the end of the evening - some sort of kit to help unhook, unclasp and unfasten would go down a treat ???? Thank You Vicki, Courtney, Ruby and the Team Janine and John MacMahon

The staff are very friendly and accommodating and very quickly assessed my daughters capabilities with their horses/ponies being allocated based on their customers experience. Perfect place for both beginners and experienced riders and if you speak nicely to Gail you may even get a chocolate or two. Why not give it a go I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Fabulous spa, one of the best I’ve been to, great staff, especially Pamela who works in the cafe, she was smiley and helpful and informative great if you have allergies to any foods.. the spa itself was huge with lots of saunas steam room, outdoor pool dnd jacuzzis, set in beautiful grounds decorated beautifully for Christmas, the staff were very helpful, great treatments, Jasmin was excellent. The only downside was that the villa we stayed in was dated, the carpet was dirty, the bathroom had hair in the floor but this was a minor setback, was nice and warm with clean sheets ... great spa break

We were staying at the Premier Inn on Goldsmith Street and the arboretum was two minutes walk away. On one occasion we took a tram from Old Market Square and got down at the High School stop at the top of the hill. We entered the Arboretum from the entrance at the top and then walked down to the Waverley street entrance opposite the cemetery. From the top we were able to go across to the Bandstand and then round this lovely green space to the Chinese Bell tower from where we reached the aviary. It’s a really peaceful place in the middle of the city close to the Nottingham Trent University and you Forest Rec ground.

This was a lovely birthday treat for my mum and although we only booked the Sunday afternoon spa it was worth it for those few hours! I would say this is one of the best spa's I've been to that's part of a hotel. Very friendly helpful staff and all the rooms are amazing! My mum has to use a wheelchair most of the time, everything is accessible and the staff were so accommodating and helpful, I want to say thank you to everyone there as we felt welcome and had an amazing afternoon! We will definitely be booking again soon! Thank you!
