Pidurangala Rock

Pidurangala is a massive rock formation located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. It has an interesting history closely related to that of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climbing to the top of Pidurangala Rock is more strenuous than climbing Sigiriya. If you are fit and adventurous it is a climb worth making. It will take you about two hours. There is far less to see on this site than Sigiriya

This place is amazing, It is a 30 mins hike, some areas we had to climb rocks, it is not than hard but it is pretty fun, We enter thought a Buddhist temple area, so shoulders, knees should be covered, they provide a silk if you need it. The small temple is nice, with a very strong energy and beautiful painting in the rock wall. On the hiking there are many trees, kind of jungle, another reclining Buddha is close to the top, after the final and more challenging climb, there is an amazing view waiting for you, the impressive Lion rock is there. After you can go a little bit more up and have 360 view, very impressive. People go there for Sunrise and Sunset I bet would be stunning. Note: drones are not allowed.

The tour of the Horton Plains and the trek to World’s End was an absolute pleasure as it allowed us a sneak peek to the wonders of the diverse wilderness available in Sri Lanka and to various natural marvels that Sri Lanka has to offer. It is also the home to a large number of endemic birds and wildlife and is indeed a must do when one is visiting the beautiful Nuwaraeliya in Sri Lanka. The splendid tour and the experience of visiting the Horton Plains and the trek to the World’s End was guided by the very experienced and capable Naturalist Hashan attached to the Grand Hotel Nuwaraeliya and, Harshana who indeed drove us safely to and from the Horton Plains. I would definitely recommend them to all thinking of visiting Nuwaraeliya.

I am horribly afraid of heights and climbing a 600ft rock was not at the top of my list for this holiday! However, it was amazing and takes about 1 hour to make the climb via some fantastic, ancient rock art and it is certainly worth the climb to discover the ruins of the most amazing palace. I am still afraid of heights but sometimes you just have to seize these opportunities.

Alagalla Mountain Range

Trekking, camping and bird watching in Alagalla the Potato Mountain Range near Kandy

Reviewed By kelum - Kandy District, Sri Lanka

Find the earliest bus to Poththapitiya -you may get it at the Good Shed bus stand ,and start the climb as early as possible. Poththapitiya is a sleepy little town and whatever the food you may need for the climb could be bought there. The road to the mountain begins from the town itself and the time it may take would be around 2 hours at leisure. Path is good enough with first part of it being through the village .Ascent begins later ,first through the little forest and later among the mana grass as the climb gets steep. There is a section with a collection of boulders right before the summit and care is needed when negotiating through them up on to the summit. Behold the vista which is virtually 360 degrees with literally a third of Srilanka in the eye. Alagalle rarely covers itself in mist so the view is a near guarantee. You have two options for the climb down .Amore adventurous one would be the decent to the rail track near Ihala Kotte station, for which a guide and a rope would be needed as the left side of the somewhat steep rock at the summit requires a rope to help yourself down it. Or you could negotiate your way back along the same route used for ascent. Risk level is mostly moderate and leech protection is a need. Public transport is available from Poththapitiya to Kandy until night fall.
