Kentucky Horse Park

The only park of its kind in the world, the Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm, educational theme park and equine competition facility dedicated to man's relationship with the horse. Set on more than 1,200 acres in the heart of the Kentucky's famous Bluegrass region, the park is THE place to get close to horses! Featuring dozens of breeds of horse at work and at play, the park showcases the horse in daily equine presentations, horse drawn tours, horseback and pony rides, and an array of horse shows and special events throughout the year. The park's International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is the world's largest equestrian museum. Offering both the experienced horseman and novice an opportunity to explore the many facets of humanity's relationship with the horse, the museum is dedicated to all breeds and disciplines of horse and covers some 50-million years of equine history. State-of-the-art technology complements rare artifacts and scholarly research to present a unique, educational, museum experience for all ages. The American Saddlebred Museum, the Showplace for Saddlebreds, celebrates Kentucky's first native breed of horse. The museum features interactive exhibits and a movie. With the park's own tourist activities and the numerous additional horse shows that take place in the equine competition facilities throughout the year, there can be a fair amount of walking involved, depending on visitor interest level. Comfortable shoes and clothing is recommended, appropriate for Kentucky's seasonal weather. Dogs and other pets are permitted on park grounds, as long as they are on a leash or in an approved carrier, although they may not be permitted in some buildings.

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park

Known as the "Niagara of the South," the 125-foot wide curtain of water is dramatic day or night. But it's only at night during a full moon that you can see the moonbow, a phenomenon not regularly visible anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere. The park's many lodging, dining, and recreational opportunities make Cumberland Falls State Resort Park the perfect location for a family vacation, business retreat, or weekend getaway to the beautiful mountains of southeast Kentucky. The DuPont Lodge features 51 rooms, the Riverview Restaurant, meeting spaces, and easy access to the park's extensive trail system. Twenty woodland rooms and 25 cottages provide guests a more secluded lodging option. The 49-site campground, gift shop, horseback riding stables, Moonbow Cafe, playgrounds, tennis court, Olympic-size swimming pool, 17 miles of trails, and much more await visitors to Cumberland Falls - one of the "Nation's Finest" state parks!

The Falls are amazing, the hiking trails are stellar, and the lodge is wonderful--the staff are all so friendly and helpful, and it's beautiful. Pro-Tip: Ask for a river view room (there are only two). The view is incredible and we had a great time. Drove over to Blue Heron Mining Camp (really cool, about a half hour away) an into Corbin for dinner at the Wrigley Taproom (great local food). If you're looking for a romantic getaway or a family vacation, you can't do better than this. Also good for meetings--our weekend started out with a Board retreat and the accommodations were perfect.

My husband has sought out lodges for years all over the US when traveling with his brothers. On a recent visit to Ohio to see family, we were looking for a hotel to stay at on the way home that would be relaxing and easy to social distance. This lodge was PERFECT. The views from our room were amazing, the views from the restaurant were amazing. Every employee was SO nice. We ended up staying 3 nights here and took full advantage of their pool, putt putt course, weekend events like painting a bird house and archery. We also hiked a few trails in the area and they were great. I'm sold on visiting lodges now. Our kids loved our time here and we would love to come back someday. My only complaint is that mini fridges and microwaves need added to all the rooms. I ended up asking for a mini fridge and one was provided, thank goodness. But they need to make it standard in all rooms.

Our group toured the beautiful Federal Hill mansion at My Old Kentucky Home State Park. We learned so much on that brief tour, the guides were entertaining and knowledgeable. One even performed a beautiful rendition of Stephen Foster‘s song ‘my old Kentucky home’. The mansion contains original furnishings, portraits of the family, it has been completely renovated in period Upholstery, wallpaper etc.The grounds surrounding the house are beautiful to wander around, and the gift shop had beautiful Kentucky derby hats to try on for fun or purchase, as we were there the week before the derby. Don’t miss this tour!

The trails provided a nice walk although could be pretty narrow in places. One could easily complete all the trails in a day. There were some steep hills that made parts of the trails challenging. The lake was nice and allowed my 11 year old son to go fishing (no license required for him). The grounds are quiet and well maintained. It was a nice relaxing way to spend the day. Entrance to the park is free, but if you want to go to the museum there is a charge.

Kingdom Come State Park

Reviewed By AlisonBaggins3

This park earns its name. The long, gently winding road that leads through the dense Kentucky forest gives you the feeling that you are reaching Kingdom Come. It's a magnificent park with several great overlooks. My husband and I are avid hikers and came to hike Harlan County on an overnight trip. After hiking first at Camp Blanton (also excellent), we arrived at Kingdom Come late in the afternoon. It is fantastic. We stopped for the overlooks before hiking to the famous "log rock." Later, we hiked a longer hike by connecting several of the trails together. We loved the cave amphitheater, then hiked up to Raven Rock. The trail to Raven Rock from the amphitheater is short, but pretty vertical. It's a good cardio-workout! At the top, you are rewarded with gorgeous, panoramic views of the Kentucky landscape. Absolutely perfect. Fall was just arriving at Kingdom Come and we were delighted to see the transition beginning. We later hiked to the "Knife Ridge" which had my favorite views. Then we headed down the mountain, and around the lake. This is a great park for couples, or young families. We would love to return with our kids. The trails are designed so that you can make them as long, or short as you wish. If you want a more rigorous hike, that's achievable. But the park is equally friendly to young children who are more interested in a half-mile hike. There is a big pond where people were fishing. You can also enjoy paddle boats, or mini-golf. Overall, it is just a really fun, friendly, family environment. We will definitely be back!

Columbus-Belmont State Park

Reviewed By maldenmusic - Malden, United States

This small state park is very clean and offers lots to do. We didn't explore the camping area because it was closed due to COVID-19. It's the first thing you pass as you enter the park. There's a conference center which was also closed. We drove to the main parking area close to the Mississippi River overlooks. There are several pavillions, the largest one has a fireplace in the middle of it. The museum was closed but we explored the grounds. Put-put golf was closed as well. There are lots of intact earthworks from the Civil War when it was briefly held by the Rebels. A easy to walk trail wanders through the earthworks. There is a large cannon on display that was used there in 1861 and recovered after the war. Also a huge chain and anchor the Rebels used to pull across the Mississippi River in attempt to ensnare Union gunboats during the Battle of Belmont (Missouri) which was on the opposite side of the river. There are lots of nice picnic tables, benches and places to view the river. Lots of trees which shade the park nicely. Because we visited during the Coronavirus pandemic, we didn't get to experience everything here but it was a lovely place to spend and we mostly had the park to ourselves.
