The quirky, millennium-old capital of Fyn (or Funen), Odense is populated by street corner sculptures of trolls and monster-footed benches. Hans Christian Andersen's birthplace is crammed with fairytale-related attractions. A plethora of castles awaits in the surrounding countryside, including the 1554 Egeskov Castle with its dramatic moat, 18 miles away. Bike or walk to visit manatees at the zoo, open-air museums, the impressive cathedral, the art cinema and bustling cafés, or see the town by riverboat.

Visit the child-sized Children’s Railway Station, brimming with trains and rails for you to play with. Go for a ride on the popular mini-train which runs every day. It is possible to enter many of the carriages and engines. All activities are free once you have paid the entrance fee.
We visited a while ago when staying with friends in the city. We're coming back later this year and my daughter has already asked to come again. We enjoyed the vintage trains, and the ride on the minature railway. A great day out, and fantastic value for money.

Take a trip out to our outdoor Museum - a village from the time of Hans Christian Andersen, where everyday life is as it was in a 19th century Funen rural environment. Mediators from Living History give you an exciting, authentic glimpse of what everyday life was like back then, operating as farmers, craftworkers, labourers and servant girls in historical dress.

Really worth a visit especially for kids. Shows how the Danes lives from 1910 to 1990 and you are allowed to touch and try everything, which makes it really a nice place. On top of this There is a whole section with clothes that you and the kids can try. The kids love this and my daughter of ten didn’t want to leave the museum.

In what was then the poorest part of Odense, behind the windows of the now iconic yellow house on the corner. This was where Hans Christian Andersen was born on Tuesday 2 April 1805, at 1 o’clock in the morning. As the son of a poor washerwoman and a not-yet-qualified cobbler, there was nothing at that time to suggest that Hans Christian Andersen would break from his social heritage to become the world’s greatest fairy tale writer.
With one ticket you can walk trough the city where Hans Christian Andersen was born and visit the museum, his old house and the places he saw and inspired his tales. The museum tells the story in very creative ways. Very friendly and nice. The city is absolutely stunning.

Danes seem to really value kids - most museums we went to on our recent family holiday had really well thought-through, good quality activities for kids. Brandts was no different - they had created the most incredible experience for kids, a storytelling adventure like I have never seen before. There was brilliant dressing-up, and a whole imaginative world where kids could play and invent their own stories. We spent 3 hours just in one small section of the museum. We also saw a great photography exhibition with a music installation that we all enjoyed. The entry price was fairly reasonable too.
