Beautifully refurbished "boutique" hotel in Chaves. Someone had a great eye for detail. Top quality bedrooms - comfortable beds, Grohe showers, Villeroy und Boch basins etc etc. Helpful and friendly staff. A real treat.

We got to the hotel at lunch time and had to look around to find help, because there was no actual reception and all the staff was having lunch. After settling in, we went to find the staff to make a request for breakfast. One of the staff was listening when the owner, an older gentleman, interrupted us in a very rude way, asking what we wanted and saying we should come back later instead of interrupting their lunch. We gave up and went to check out the pool. It was not cleaned, the water was full of bugs and not transparent at all. So we decided to leave the hotel, without even asking for the money back. Before leaving, the owner asked to talk to us, in a very rude manner. We warned them about the pool, and once again the owner was very rude saying that we didn’t know anything about pools. Later that day his wife called us to apologise for his behaviour and offering to refund us for our stay. That refund never came!!

This was a good experience. The rooms are quite new and spacious, mainly the family one. The swimming pool is quite good as the area around. The breakfast was standard. A good option if you are in the area. It is a couple of km to the town center, but possible to walk. There is car parking available next to each room.

Imagine a century house , just a few meters from Douro river banks, side by side with an old picturesque train station. A place that breaths history and where different generations meet, originating a project with the eyes set on the future…welcome to the Original Douro Hotel!
I'm going to be the bad guy here and give this a less than perfect review (which I know is going against the crowd). First of all, the owner had a vision of restoring the old hotel into what it is today and did a wonderful job of making it modern yet retaining the charm of the old. From a charm perspective, you probably can get much higher. But I'd like to point out the practical side of things. I booked a "superior" room which probably wasn't much different from a regular room. The listing said the room had a "private balcony" which turned out to be about one foot (0.3 m) wide. Yes, you could open the doors (which wasn't an easy thing to do) but you couldn't really do anything with the balcony (like sit or stand on it). The room was also billed as a "city view" which is a fancy way of saying it doesn't look at the river. You get a great look at the apartments across the two lane street which was certainly better than being in the back on the train tracks. The room was small and I certainly expected that. The bathroom was retrofitted into the old rectangular room and was much less charming that the rest of the building. It was small and they took the cheap route with the sink/vanity and some other aspects. The main stairs in the building are quite steep (and in my view dangerous to most people). There is a small elevator but it takes over a minute to move two floors. If you have to wait for it to come it will seem like a very long time. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included and was so-so. Nothing hot. More than a continental breakfast but a smaller selection than most hotel breakfasts. Charm? Yes, lots of it. Quirks. Yes, lots of them. If you are looking for charm and can put up with the quirks, then you'll like it here. If you are maybe a little more practical, then maybe this isn't the place for you.

We made an unexpected stop to northern Portugal....And found this wonderfully renovated Bed & Breakfast in the town of Codesosso (sp?). Beautiful rooms, updated baths and one of the best breakfasts I have ever had! The food just kept coming, from fruit and cereals to homemade cakes and bread, eggs and bacon, fresh squeezed juices...I could go on and on!! This place is a real gem and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little touch of home while experiencing the beautiful terrain of Chaves/Boticas. Already booked it for next year!
