Marquette Mountain Ski and Bike Area

A real "skier's hill" featuring a vertical drop of 600 feet with 23 trails on 150 ski-able and bike-able acres. The Carp River Saloon also has a great tap beer system, a great menu and live music year around.

The conditions were awesome and the view of lake superior was amazing! The city of Marquette is really cool with a ton of options for lodging and restaurants. Enjoyed the Ore Dock brewery-great local beers and the food was great at the Vierling and Stein house. The history in Marquette is extremely interesting. Enjoyed a Division 1 hockey game at Northern Michigan University (NMU) which is in town. Amazing place with a lot to do. We will definitely be back.

Outdoor recreation area features 18 trails for the alpine skier plus a Terrain Park and Half Pipe for the snowboard enthusiast.

Always a great hill to ski. Lots of terrain to explore. Beginners should be comfortable with older chair lifts that are faster and tougher to load/exit. Ask them to slow down if unfamiliar.

Porcupine Mountains Ski Area

Located on the shore of Lake Superior, the "Porkies" ski area features eleven miles of slope covering 100 acres of ski-able terrain, plus scenic trail systems for cross-country enthusiasts.

Reviewed By ChassSue - Evanston, United States

Had a great time at the Porkies, fabulous snow, well groomed, woodsy trails that are quite a bit longer than we had anticipated and on par with any other UP ski area and worth the extra travel to check it out. A very reasonable $45 ticket but only one well placed triple chair and a helper rope tow that connects you to the west side of the mountain Great lodge with rentals, a small ski shop, lockers and a fairly priced cafateria. Only open Friday through Monday 9-5 SKI THE PORKIES!!

Copper Peak

Copper Peak is the largest artificial ski jump in the world, and the largest ski jump in North America. The 35 degree, 469 foot, cantilevered inrun was constructed using 300 tons of COR-TEN steel in 1969 at a cost of just over $1 million. Today, visitors can ride an 800-foot chairlift and a 18-story elevator to an observation deck, then walk 8 flights to the top of Copper Peak for one of the most stunning views in the Midwest. On a clear day, 3 states and Canada are visible from this amazing vista! Located on the Black River Scenic Byway and just minutes from Lake Superior and majestic waterfalls, Copper Peak is a must-see sight. Visitors in 2020 and beyond will also see renovations occurring at the site, as local supporters are working towards bringing world-class ski flying back to Copper Peak and the United States.

The day was overcast but we went anyway. All I was hoping for was no rain, and we were blessed with no rain. When I saw how the lift to the top of the ski jump hill was practically straight up, I nearly freaked but went on the trip anyway. I was a bit scared. The walk to the elevator was short, I do walk with a cane but I took it slow as your either walking on grass that was uneven or a dirt with small stone, path. The elevator ride was smooth to get to the initial viewing platform. There are small wooden steps then metal grated steps if you want to climb to the top, which we did. Much windier all the way at the top. I wasn’t going to take the additional steps up to the tippy top but figured I was there and probably wouldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t try. I’m glad I did. I really loved the trip. It wasn’t crowded; maybe due to the weather forecast. I don’t know but it was great. It would have been amazing if the sun came out but that isn’t Copper Peak’s fault.

This was our second year staying on the property and the condo was clean and cozy as usual. Last year, there was a lovely hot tub in the basement of the condo property, but this year it was drained and obviously not working, along with the sauna. However, those amenities are available in the main lodge, so we still were able to take advantage, in spite of the minor inconvenience of staying at Blackjack and having to make a fifteen minute drive to get there. The slopes were well groomed, in spite of a lack of natural snow for the prior three weeks (they have no control over the weather). All staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and bartender Lori was very helpful about explaining the shuttle service between the two mountains. Loved it so much this year, that we may be back later in the month.

This was our second visit to Blackjack. With Covid you were able to use the restroom, put on gear, purchase & eat food, and warm up. It was disappointing in which chair lifts they had opened. We weren't able to access all of the hill without skating to a chair at the bottom. All the chairs are old school with the bar in the middle. The runs we could access were great & groomed. We did enjoy the black diamonds more than Indianhead. There were a ton of newbies on intermediate & black diamonds out back.

The staff at Ski Brule is amazing. The rental office called us to make sure we were okay on our way up, (the roads were awful). The rental team and pro shop were super fast, friendly, and willing to help with everything we needed. I love that I can sit in our room and watch the kids enjoying the trails. This has been a great mid-winter getaway for our family! Thank you all for being amazing.
