Founded in the mid-17th century as a winter quarters for traders and tax collectors, Irkutsk came to prominence in the 1800s. Participants in the Decembrist revolt against Tsar Nicholas I were exiled to Siberia in droves, turning Irkutsk into their cultural center. Today, it’s one of Siberia’s biggest and most important cities, with over half a million people, many universities, many historic churches and museums, and beautiful Lake Baikal, just about an hour away by train.

Back in October '19 I had the pleasure of going on a 1 day tour to Olkhon Island, departing from Irkutsk, together with 3 other female friends of mine, during our Trans-Siberian journey. Andrew was our tour guide and I must say that everything was absolutely incredible. I definitely recommend Baikal Vision to everyone who's considering a trip to this area of the globe and I must thank Andrew once again for making it a wonderful experience for all of us.

During the tour (by car/bus) the guide will show you the city's historical center. You will get acquainted with the history of Irkutsk and will see the city's main streets, churches, famous buildings and monuments. Irkutsk was founded in 1661 on the place of the junction of the Angara and the Irkut Rivers. The Irkut River gave the name to the city. At first, it was just a little wooden town, but it developed very fast, and 25 years later Irkutsk was given the status of the city. Today Irkutsk is one of the largest economic, industrial and cultural centres of Eastern Siberia. The citizens of the city believe that Irkutsk means for Siberia as much as Paris for France and London for England.
