Instead of going on the $109 excursion of the cruise ship we were on in Cadiz, we booked a tasting at Gutierrez Colonia on our own. The ferry to El Puerto de Santa Maria was only a few blocks from the cruise ship dock, round trip ferry fare was 5.50 Euro. The winery was only a few blocks from the other end of the ferry. And then the tour itself (10 Euro each) was small, only eight of us (but from 5 different countries), but very thorough. And included tasting SIX different varieties of sherry! The guide, one of the owners I think, explained every step and had wonderful anecdotes. I had always thought sherry was like Port, but no! And I had also not known there were so many varieties. And they were all delicious!! We had planned to also go to one of the big bodegas, but after tasting six kinds of sherry, we really didn't think we could do another. but there was no reason to, anyway. We decided, after the tasting, that we had tried the very best , so why look further? This is one of a very few, (three?) small producers left, and their claim to fame is that they are so close to the river, and the sea, that their products taste differently (and better!) than those farther away. My favorite was the Cream, but we also liked the Moscatel and actually, all of them! It was well worth going on our own instead of with a big tour. So if you happen to be in the area, go see them!

We let the company know we would be on a cruise. They did not send us the meeting place before we left but provided a phone contact number. Upon arrival at Cadiz we found the number had been disconnected. We had help from two other tour operators that were very kind but also unable to contact our tour company. We wandered around for quite some time looking for anyone with a sign or our group to no avail, the tour was missed. When I requested a refund, my request was denied. They said other people were able to find them and they were not responsible for the inaccurate contact information. My error; I should have read some of the other reviews before booking!! Lesson learned, read reviews!

On a recent sojourn by train in Spain, we finally came to a town that had great weather and fantastic bicycling possibilities. About a short stone's throw from where we stayed (No 14, Calle Ancha 31, a nice suite in an appartmentbuilding, very well located, but quite damp - aircirculation could have been better) we found a pretty hip, small shop that rented out bicycles (€20 for a whole day) and we picked up two bikes the next morning. One of them seemed a little run down, and it was, but cycleable enough not to return while we were touring the coast. We decided a second day trip, and we rented anew, with a €5 discount on one bike - nice gesture. Again, Cadiz is a town where biking is fun !
