My husband and I travel constantly all over the world and ALWAYS hire private guides. I cannot recommend Joyce highly enough. I am extremely particular about everything--from the type of car we travel in, to choosing the best five-star hotels wherever we go, to where we eat each meal. I enjoy working with a guide who knows the region well and can make knowledgeable recommendations; one who will help me plan our itinerary down to the last detail. Joyce has the patience of a saint; she not only planned ONE detailed itinerary, but when a health issue potentially interfered with our plans and we had to make some major adjustments to both dates and places, at the last minute she she ended up planning a SECOND totally different vacation for us (though I strongly recommend you book as early as possible--since she has many repeat customers, as we will no doubt become!). Not only is she extremely reliable and punctual (I don't think there was one email of the innumerable ones I sent her that was not answered within a few hours--even with a six hour time difference to the US from Belgium!), she also has a great personality. You will no doubt find her charming and extremely accommodating. No matter where we went, the locals knew her and adore her. Instead of the usual tourist traps, she took us places we never would have found on our own (including a chocolate store where we bought the best chocolate ever). No matter the request, she did her very best to fulfill it. On our last day, she even arranged to retrieve my fur hat from a restaurant in Ghent where I had accidentally left it (nearly an hour away) and have it delivered to my hotel! Joyce definitely goes "BEYOND" what you hope for in a guide!

3. WW II - Bastogne - The Battle Of The Bulge

Mike Eyns Tours

This will be another most memorable day, to tribute to these thousands of Heroes who offered their lives for our freedom. We would drive straight to Bastogne and start this journey by visiting the Historical WW II Museum and the Memorial “ Mardasson Memorial “ erected by the Belgians remembering the American Liberators. This extraordinary monument is constructed in the shape of a five pointed star and was built in honor of the 76,890 American soldiers who were killed, wounded or missing in the Battle of the Bulge. Another popular destination which your guide will ensure you don't miss is the Bois de la Paix, The Wood of Peace. In a design that is only visible from the air, 4,000 trees have been planted and laid out in the symbol of human tenderness - a mother and child. From Bastogne, we will get to Luxembourg city for a little discovering, before visiting The American Cemetery in Luxembourg. Later, we will aim Ettelbruck to visit the General George S. Patton Memorial Museum.

Thankfully, the battlefield is largely as it appeared in 1815. Rolling hills, farm fields, the wooded and walled Hougoumont (well-restored) and la Haye Saint (not so much). Still, the vibe and the atmosphere is evocative of the crucial Napoleonic struggle that took place here. The museum is excellent. Creative displays, lots of artifacts. The great Lions mound is a bit of a distraction. But it does afford spectacular views of the entire battlefield. Two downsides: the busy road that runs right through the field, north to south, is a little offputting. And Napoleon’s command position was overgrown with shrubs when I was there.

Claude was prompt in picking us up from our hotel in Lille and then took us to see the final resting places of two of our family members, who were both killed in 1918. He was very flexible and worked in with our plans to visit these two graves at two different war cemeteries. He then took us around numerous battlefield sites and war cemeteries, involving New Zealanders, and his knowledge was first class. For that special day in connecting with those special soldiers, contact Claude and he will make it happen.
