Amhara (Amharic: አማራ) is one of the nine ethnic divisions (kililoch) of Ethiopia, containing the homeland of the Amhara people. Previously known as Region 3, its capital is Bahir Dar. Ethiopia's largest inland body of water, Lake Tana, which is the source of the Blue Nile river, is located within Amhara. The region also contains the Semien Mountains National Park, which includes Ras Dashan, the highest point in Ethiopia. Amhara is bordered by the state of Sudan to the west and northwest, and in other directions by other regions of Ethiopia: Tigray to the north, Afar to the east, Benishangul-Gumuz to the west and southwest, and Oromia to the south.

Just in the end of a daunting 2020, we had an amazing tailor made tour with Daniel through the churches of Lalibela, the 2 clusters and Bete Yiorgis in the city and the further away older churches Bilbala Kirkos and Yemrehane Kristos (cave church). It was our second trip with Daniel and we wanted to focus on photographing priests. As a priest's son himself, Daniel knows all the priests of each church, all the nooks and crannies of the clusters and the best timings to see or avoid the mass and the crowds. Apart from the rock-hewn churches, expect a cultural trip as well to see and taste every Lalibela's secret. I have to say that Daniel is an excellent, experienced, flexible professional who understands his customers' needs and offers the most wholistic and inspiring experience.

●Our English tour guide was Maereg Tefere, a humble person with immense knowledge of churches and its history. He’s very friendly and caring all the time. We were 5 people visiting the churches in Lalibela and he was just walking us and simply explaining the background, the differences between churches, the Orthodox practices, the activities there… Sometime we couldn’t completely understand probably because he’s telling story quite fast. But we were able to ask any question and we enjoyed his company. ●The churches stood there for almost one thousand years which were built (carved/dug) in well-scaled plan in a short period of time. When we actually saw them with our own eyes, it was just unbelievable! ●Afterwards Maereg helped us buying local piece of fabrics for covering our heads at Misa the next day and we discussed about the culture, economy and the current society, everything. That day was great. ●The churches tour is highly recommended. (If you’re not religious, you would still feel speechless as knowing story behind while seeing it!) Also thanks to Maereg.

This group of eleven monolithic and semi-monolithic structures was carved directly into the stone of the mountainside at least 900 years ago. This complex boasts the largest monolithic church in the world, a maze of passageways and tunnels, intricately carved reliefs, and fabulous examples of icon paintings. Wow is all I can say! The historical landmark of Lalibela was an unforgettable experience. Perfection is an understatement! Maereg was the perfect guide! He speaks great English and very responsive to emails! I got a response in less than 24 hours as they are in a different time zone so immediately if you ask me. He waited for me at the airport even though I was an hour late due to flight confusion on my end. He is extremely knowledgeable and gave me a deep understanding of the rock hewn churches. He is patient, kind and wonderful tour guide. Maereg answered all my questions and gave me more insight than I expected. Not only did he cover the history of the rock hewn churches but he also gave me an in depth history of Ethiopia itself. He has years of experience doing this and there is no other tour group I would choose! We got straight to the churches and I am still blown away by this experience I had to make a review to let others know of how wonderful Ethiopia and its history is! Friendly people and great tours you will love. I will return and use extraordinary tour group again!

Massive erosion over the years on the Ethiopian plateau has created one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world, with jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys and sharp precipices dropping some 1,500 m. The park is home to some extremely rare animals such as the Gelada baboon, the Simien fox and the Walia ibex, a goat found nowhere else in the world. Simien National Park, in northern Ethiopia is a spectacular landscape, where massive erosion over millions of years has created jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys and sharp precipices dropping some 1,500 m. Over the centuries a series of churches of differing sizes and architectural styles were carved into cliff-faces and rocky-outcrops, many still in use today. Whilst following Ethiopia’s classic northern circuit through Lake Tana’s monasteries, Gondar’s castles, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela’s monolithic churches, we get off the beaten path and explore this beautiful region in the heart of Ethiopian history.Journey along Ethiopia's magnificent northern circuit .

expat in Addis , My family and I had a fantastic experience with EthioTours . Had a fantastic morning tour on lake Tana . Beautiful sunrise and a fantastic breakfast. The guide was really knowledgeable about all the animals we saw and explained about the fishermen and what they were doing. Saw plenty of hippos too! It was an amazing experience, we visited three beautiful islands . We would like to thank Melese for showing us all unique areas and sharing the stories . Private tour was absolute best way to relax and see the beauty of the lake. Highly recommended !
