This winegrower's house, built on the southern slopes of the Domaine de Saint-Cloud at the end of the 17th century, was converted into a country retreat in the early 19th century. It belonged to novelist Honore de Balzac, and subsequently became the property of Leon Gambetta, the founder of the Third Republic, who bought the house in 1878 and died here four years later. The Maison des Jardies has retained its original decor and today recalls the life and work of this great statesman and combative republican.
