Travel back to 1927 with the help of colourful characters who will reveal the secrets of this authentic company village with its forty original buildings. Celebrating its 100th birthday this year, the Saint-Georges de Val-Jalbert convent-school has resisted the hazards of time, and remains one of the best preserved buildings in the village. You'll be amazed by the Ouiatchouan Falls, which are higher than Niagara. Ride the cable car to the summit of the mountain and discover the breathtaking panorama. Live the magic of the immersive multimedia show with its illumination of the artefacts in the mill -- and the life of the workers! 110 Years later and Val-Jalbert is now home to a mini hydroelectric power plant, a plant that is to helping to insure the sustainability of the tourist experience. The discovery of this jewel of architectural integration takes place over the course of a walk featuring a series of interpretive devices. Lookouts and perches provide spectacular views of the Ouiatchouan Falls and the river. This walk offers visitors a historical, industrial, technical, socio-economic, environmental and even an artistic perspective -- in short, a global view of the project.
Visited Val-Jalbert in early July 2019. I had only heard about it somewhat mockingly, in a song by the Colocs (Montreal 1990’s band). I wondered if it might be what the Quebecois call “quétaine” or tacky. In fact, it was anything but. Imagine a real life “living” ghost town complete with costumed interpreters, a magnificent waterfall, some naturally dilapidated buildings, a pleasant pedestrian walk and a really impressive overview multimedia presentation. Throw in a gondola ride to the top of the waterfall with spectacular views of Lac Saint-Jean and you have a very pleasant few hours soaking up a little bit of history, that of a village built entirely around a pulp and paper mill that thrived in the early 20th century but was abandoned when the pulp and paper market crashed. They have done a great job of preserving the Village’s history so that many generations can see what life was like at the time. It was impressive and well worth the visit to Val-Jalbert.

Absolutely a beautiful church. Some of the stain-glass windows is what you would have seen visiting Notre-Dame in Paris. This church is quite large, enough to fit 1500 people. It is located close to Saguenay and is an easy walk from or to downtown. St. Francois is actually the fourth church to be built on this small hill. Two of the other churches burnt down. The present church opened in 1922. If you get a chance, stopping and viewing this church is well worth the effort.
