Located in the dramatic mountains of Pentadaktylos, this octagonal 12th-century monastic church is decorated with frescoes.
It is well worth the trip into the forest from Entesseppe to visit this beautiful church. It costs next to nothing for entry, paid to the "keeper" in a bare office. The atmosphere inside is something special, the Christian frescoes in various states of decay add to this. There are also a group of icons and a candle stand for prayers and intentions. The view over the sea is very pleasant too, on a hot day the breeze was a blessing. I believe the Keeper will provide drinks if requested, a long table in the shade is there to enjoy refreshments.

The weather was cool when we visited in middle of March and it was not too crowded. The climb up was not complicated - simply follow the signage and stone steps all the way up. The peak iof the castle is at over 700 metres. It offers a commanding views of Kyrenia/Girne area. We saw some visitors from group tours scrambled up the castle due to the limited time given for them to explore the sprawling castle grounds. We hired a taxi service from North Cyprus Brothers Taxi Services and could spend a good amount of time at the castle. We were picked up at our hotel in South Nicosia, went through the customs at the borders smoothly and had 6-7 hours to explore St Hilarion Castle, Kyrenia Harbour, the old harbour & Bellapais Abbey at a leisurely pace. Kyrenia, and especially St Hillarion Castle, is worth a day's visit as the views here are picturesque, and offered a different perspective of Cyprus.

Abtei von Bellapais Bellapais Abbey
We visited as part of a tour of Northern Cyprus and loved the village and the monastery. The views are beautiful and the monastery and its surroundings are tranquil and interesting - definitely worth a visit and you can see why Laurence Durrell chose to write here!

Superb place to visit whilst in the area. There is quite a lot to see to do it justice so it is advised to allow at least a couple of hours. Give some thought to footwear as there are a lot of uneven, stony surfaces. It is not really signposted very well on the outside but there is a cafe within the castle where you can rest & buy refreshment (you might need it on a hot day). Unusually for a Cypriot tourist attraction there are quite a few useful bulletin boards, as you walk around, explaining the history of the castle. Fascinating.

This is a tribute to who died in 1974 and the place where the first soldiers arrived yo save the Turkish Cypriots. Well kept and very interesting. Worth a visit and on the main road as you cannot miss it.
