This is a lovely place to visit! The guides are so nice and knowledgable about the history of the site and answered all of our questions. I would recommend also making sure you make time to see the planetarium - there is a slide show there in English.

A hilltop site of a Jesuit mission.
These ruins are a reminder of the damage that is done by colonialism to another nation's culture, in this case by the C18th Spanish. Fortunately, the Paraguayans had the sense to expel the Jesuits before too much damage was done. The site is open, relaxed viewing, a nice museum and the remains of some lovely sandstone ruins with a nice touch of Moorish architecture in the arches. Interesting and enjoyable visit.

What the Jesuits sought to do was rather altruistic. There was no gold or silver in Paraguay, perhaps accounting for the willingness of Spain to give huge tracts of land to the Jesuits for their missions or reducciones to provide work for the natives and convert them to Christianity. Jesus de Tavarangue was never finished with the 1767 expulsion of the Jesuits. It moved around, settling here in 1760. The size of the church and the extent of the remains has made it a World Heritage Site. The principal building was of course the church, everything else reduced to a very low level. The church was built as a replica of St Ignatius of Loyoya in Italy, accounting for its size. From the mirador, Trinidad could be seen, a source of communication between the two Jesuit reductions.

This mission was founded in 1685 by Jesuit father Jeronimo Delfin. In 1993, it was declared as a World cultural heritage of UNESCO. Recently, we provide new attraction which is '3D Video Mapping Show' at 19:30, on every thursday to sunday.
