The 10 Best Sights & Landmarks in Guangdong, China

February 28, 2022 Moriah Teneyck

Guangdong (Chinese: 广东) is a province in South China, located on the South China Sea coast. Traditionally romanised as Kwangtung, Guangdong surpassed Henan and Sichuan to become the most populous province in China in January 2005, registering 79.1 million permanent residents and 31 million migrants who lived in the province for at least six months of the year; the total population was 104,303,132 in the 2010 census, accounting for 7.79 percent of Mainland China's population. This also makes it the most populous first-level administrative subdivision of any country outside the former British Raj, as its population is surpassed only by those of the Pakistani province of Punjab and the Indian states of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The provincial capital Guangzhou and economic hub Shenzhen are among the most populous and important cities in China. The population increase since the census has been modest, the province at 2015 had 108,500,000 people.

Beautiful Chinese-architecture mosque. It is believed to be the oldest mosque site in China, dating back over 1,300 years. Nice and well-maintained buildings and gardens. Over the years, the buildings have been rebuilt, time and again.

Shamian Island

This lovely, tree-lined neighborhood bordering the Pearl River was once home to foreign merchants, and today is a laid-back area ideal for strolling or stopping for a meal or cup of tea.

We stopped by after hearing about this area of town from plenty of other folks. We took a cab over from our hotel- roughly 15 minutes - and walked around for about 2 hours. Even at 9 am in the summer, it’s hot! We went through plenty of water and even found a 7-11 where we got a slurpee! I hadn’t had one is about 20 years, but that cools to the core! The white swan hotel, the fingerprinting guy at Helen’s place and the fabled friendship garden statues were all on the agenda and made for a good morning. We got plenty of souvenirs at Michael’s place and worked up an appetite sweating the rest of the morning! Takeaways - the maps here are not helpful and things can be hard to find. If you can map things out s bit beforehand, it’s worth it...or just get on WiFi. A great half day excursion that can go, basically as long as you want it to! Worth checking out for sure!

Baomo Scenery

This area has magnificent gardens and beautiful sculptures.

Great day at these awesome gardens. Visited both Baomo and Nanyue Gardens for ¥80 (after discount). Outstanding and meticulously detailed building structures, walls, roof tops, arches, pillars and ceilings. The sculptures were expertly crafted, the colours are vibrant and rival elaborate structures found around he world. There are beautiful lakes with absolutely large Koi fish, several fountains, some expertly designed waterfalls through rocks, an awesome boat as the center piece of Baomo Garden and a beautiful waterfall as the main attraction in Nanyue Garden above a well designed and lit up cave with stalagmites and stalactites . Well worth a visit. Kids and seniors pay half price and seniors over 65 are free. Several restaurants and tea garden cafes inside but a bit on the expensive side, but still worth the price with with a decent atmosphere and good service. However, outside the gardens nestled between the two gardens are some cheaper outdoor restaurants. Baomo also has a swimming pool for families with kids, as well as some boat rides. You also get discount coupons for the boat rides. All in all well worth spending a few hours exploring...

Just over an hour by car from Guangzhou, where the site has good parking. The Ceramics and Kiln museums had a nice park behind them as well as numerous shops selling ceramics and pottery. The kiln museum was okay but the ceramics was awesome! You need to allow at least 3 hours to appreciate all the sights and pottery and ceramic displays and making! Well worth the visit!

The Ancestral Temple

Excellent place. Lots of history and culture to see and experience. Good show of the lion dance. It is located next to two malls with one being called Nova. So, it is in a pretty central area of Foshan. It is also next to a place where you can see lots of small shops and restaurants in and around narrow alleyways. This place is also worth a visit especially at night, so you may visit it after touring the ancestral temple. The entrance for the temple is also not that expensive. It is 20 RMB a person. You can pay by cash, WeChat, or AliPay. You may also be able to pay by card (maybe).

Zhujiang New Town is central to most of the major sights in Guangzhou like the Canton Tower, Guangzhou Opera House, Guangdong Museum, IFC building and the East Tower. There are many restaurants nearby which will offer fantastic views of the area. The area is also very well served by the metro and shopping malls. A visit to Guangzhou would be incomplete if you missed this area. The area plays host to many festivals and celebrations like the GZ International Light Festival, Chinese National Week and Chinese New Year. The area is ever changing. We find ourselves here at least once a month for dinner with friends or a weekend trip into the city.

Xianhu Botanical Garden

Also known as Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens, this massive, verdant escape has lots to offer even if you are not a botanical buff. A popular pastime among locals is to rent a boat and explore the lake.

Reviewed By zjemi - Northampton, United States

Beautiful flower gardens, cactus gardens, shade plants, a Buddhist temple. Initially we saw a monument on a high hill and thought that was the temple and decided to climb to it. After about a half hour of climbing in Shenzhen weather, we came to a direction post and decided to go to the lower down places instead. So although we saw the fairy lake, the water plant nursery, the shade plants, cacti, and lots of beautiful flower areas, we missed the paleontology garden and some other cool places. As it was, we left so late that two cab drivers didn't want to take the 34 minute ride to our hotel because they wanted to quit work at 4.

Walked through the personal residence, the grounds then the museum depicting him as a young scholar to a revolutionary. His famous quote " The World is Equally Shared By All" on front wall before entering the grounds resonated with me. So much so, I bought a scroll with the quote in museum gift shop. Sun Yat Sen is considered the "George Washington" of China.

For a great selection of shows, Beijing is by far the leader. Come on Guangzhou, let’s gets more Chinese content.
