Cantigny Park and the area is a great place to go for a ice walk in nature, visit an ornate mansion, and learn about military history. It’s got to be one of the top places to visit in the Chicago west suburbs.

Absolutely love the riverwalk- There is an upper brick, lower concrete walk or jog you can take, I do most days along the river- Things to see, plants, flowers, fish, ducks, kayakers, diverse families, water fountains, covered bridges, occasional snakes, frogs, a solo heron. Great place for subrises or sunsets- No bikes allowed- It is lit so you can even walk at dusk- Lots of people of all ages, babies in strollers, on it- Early am more quiet and serene- There is a brand new playground west of the quarry. Clean bathrooms, accessibility to lots of restaurants. Paddleboats, kayaks for rent May to September plus a riverwalk cafe in season near rotary hill. You can walk up to the top of the Carilllon and see the entire area from above during certain weekend hours as well.

Naperville Historic District in downtown Naperville is a great place for recreation. Naper Settlement serves as the main historic underpinning. The settlement has restored historic buildings moved to this historic museum from different places in Naperville. Areas adjacent to Naper Settlement are thoroughly enjoyable with various opportunities for recreation. The Riverwalk which straddles both sides of the Du Page River is a lovely place. The Quarry lake provides opportunity for boating and fishing in season. The pedestrian bridges across the river are beautiful. The Moser Tower is another unmissable attraction. All in all, a visit to Naperville Historic District will be fully enjoyable.

On the National Register of Historic Places, Mayslake Hall stands as a rare surviving example of the magnificent country houses that were built in DuPage County during the Gilded Age. It now serves the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County as a cultural education center, home to concerts, theatre, art exhibits and art and photo classes. We offer historic tours of the mansion on Wednesdays at 11am & 11:30am and on Saturdays at 9:30am, 10am, 11am and 11:30am.

When I lived in Wheaton and Glen Ellyn in the late 1960s and early 1970s, for whatever reason, I never took advantage of the many sight-seeing opportunities available to me in the western suburbs. Now that I live on the Gold Coast in downtown Chicago, I take advantage of every opportunity. Like Kline Creek Farm in West Chicago. It's like taking a step back in time, exploring and experiencing what life was like on a Du Page County farm in the 1890s. Located at 1N600 Country Farm Road, in the Timber Ridge Forest Preserve, it represents 19th century farm activities, such as baking, canning, planting, harvesting, sheep shearing, quilting, spring cleaning and ice cutting, even beekeeping, through programs designed for individuals, families and groups. Visitors are encouraged to begin their tour at the Timber Ridge Visitor Center, which offers exhibits of the 1890s and the agricultural heritage of Du Page County. Then stroll through restored farmstead structures and meet the historically costumed interpreters who explain the living history of the farm using tools and techniques of the past. The farmhouse was the center of domestic activities and today contains original artifacts and reproductions that enhance its homelike atmosphere. Interestingly, beekeeping is a longstanding tradition at Klein Creek Farm, dating to 1984. In fact, the sale of honey at the Visitor Center helps to support farm programs and operations. The farm is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday.

We (wife and I) spent a sunny July afternoon hiking / biking through Fullersburg Woods enjoying the wonderful surrounding nature. Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve in Oak Brook a hidden nature haven in an urban setting. The main trail is about a 3 mile loop meandering through the forest setting as it follows Salt Creek which winds around the bluff and past a few islands on its way to the historic watermill at the southern end of the park. The wide trail is paved with fine gravel, and is better enjoyed on a leisurely bike ride or on a hike. The trail crosses the creek a few times by means of beautiful bridges. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow and maps are located at major intersections of trail paths. Picnic shelters and rest benches are installed frequently along the trail. The dam/waterfall is worth lingering to enjoy. The other main features in the park like the Graue Mill Museum, Nature Center and Ben Fuller House were not open when we visited due to the pandemic. Fullersburg Woods is very popular and is widely used for hiking, fishing and boating. This is a really enjoyable place.
