October 23, 2021 Florencio Paulino

Darlington is a large market town in County Durham, in North East England. With a population of 92,363 in 2011, the town lies on the River Skerne, a tributary of the River Tees. The town is administered as part of the Borough of Darlington. The town owes much of its development to the influence of local Quaker families in the Georgian and Victorian era, and who provided much of the finance and vision in creating the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first steam locomotive powered, permanent passenger railway. The town is often colloquially referred to as 'Darlo'.

Raby Castle

Reviewed By CathyGilman - London, United Kingdom

This is a beautiful castle and parkland but what really stands out are the team. From the person in the carpark to the welcome at the castle, this is the warmest welcome weve ever had at a place like this. The castle is stunning, especially the views across the deer park. It has been beautifully preserved and well informed volunteers bring it alive. The gardens are lovely with lots of hidden corners and sun traps, easy to get away from other people. Lots to see and do and when we were there a lovely Halloween trail for children ????

Tees Cottage Pumping Station

Reviewed By LauraT404 - Middlesbrough, United Kingdom

This looks like a really interesting place. We walked past whilst hiking The Teesdale Way and will definitely be returning to visit properly sometime soon. Note: only open 1 weekend a month by the looks of it, so check out their website before you plan a visit. Entry is £5 each, under 16s free. Tees Cottage Pumping Station Attractions Tees Cottage has Lancashire Boilers dating from 1902, a 1904, steam-powered, Beam Engine and a 1914 Gas Engine, all in operation and still pumping water from the River Tees (although no longer supplying the town’s water!). We also have a Blacksmith’s Shop, where demonstrations are usually given, and a Miniature Railway, with rides provided by the Cleveland Association of Model Engineers for a small additional charge. Refreshments are available in our Tea Room or you can bring a picnic to enjoy on our grounds.

Market Hall and Clock Tower

Reviewed By sheepygold

This market represents the heart of the town. It has an impressive clock tower on the outside and an interesting market within selling fruit and vegetables, meat, fish as well as an extremely extensive haberdashery stall. There is a basic cafe inside and a number of eateries on the boundary.

David Mach's Train sculpture, Darlington

Reviewed By 992chrissy - Redcar, United Kingdom

A very interesting sculpture depicting the iconic Mallard leaving a tunnel with steam billowing from the engine. It's a fitting tribute to Darlington's railway heritage especially as it is close to the origin railway line.

Joseph Pease Statue

This is a prominent statue in the market place however most people don't give it a second chance which is a shame as Mr Pease was an interesting and important historical character in particular he campaigned for the abolition of slavery.
