Breda (Dutch pronunciation: [breːˈdaː] ( listen)) is a city and municipality in the southern part of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant. The name Breda derived from brede Aa ('wide Aa' or 'broad Aa') and refers to the confluence of the rivers Mark and Aa. As a fortified city, the city was of strategic military and political significance. Although a direct Fiefdom of the Holy Roman Emperor, the city obtained a municipal charter; the acquisition of Breda, through marriage, by the House of Nassau ensured that Breda would be at the center of political and social life in the Low Countries. Breda had a population of 183,456 in 2017; the metropolitan area had a population of 324,812. It is part of the Brabantse Stedenrij.

Very nice indeed to be back in Breda - which has always been my favourite City in the Nertherlands - drastically underrated. Had a walk round it, with some others - great architecture, and it always look impressive when illuminated by the Sun. Truly represents the very heart of Breda.

In thre midst of the obvious shops and commercial crap you find this small oasis that has given so much comfort and consolation over the years and for many generations. This is where catholic mothers bring their kods and teach them how to light a candle and to pray and be quiet. This where chlidren start to understand w/o words the love and often the suffering of their mother their parents. The world. Breda had to give away their majestic Notre Dame to the protestant communuty since the "beeldenstorm" . Unlike the St Jan in Den Bosch where locals light their candles - Breda locals go here. Small and serene -a hidden gem.
