The walk up to the chateau can be done in as little as 30 minutes from the car park below and is well worth the effort. However, there is little information and I would suggest that anyone going there read my book "The Heretics' Revenge" available on Kindle as an Ebook. After several visits and extensive research, it is the most comprehensive story ever written about the Cathars at Montsegur and more particularly their hidden relic. Montsegur saw 210 Cathars burnt alive as heretics as just a small, but highly significant, part of the genocide of the Cathars.

prehistoric paintings some 12,000 years old....maybe more....explored in the darkness of a cave lit only by a flashlight - one carried by each member of the group....what a fabulous experience. This is not Disneyland - no tourist tat, no cafes or other stuff....just the incredible experience of walking a couple of miles through the side of a cliff, sometimes on rough going, sometimes squeezing through small gaps in the rock....to see unbelievably beautiful works of art made by Cro-Magnon man. How much better than queueing up to spend 10 seconds in front of the Mona Lisa? Make sure you BOOK, take your own refreshments (especially water during the cave walk) and ENJOY this wonderful wonderful unique experience.

Amazing but visit when the sun is out as the stained glass windows give a sense of ghostly going on. Delightful cathedral and definetly wotrth a detour. For best results with photos - do NOT use the flash.
