Loughrigg Fell

Reviewed By mgsnorwich - Norwich, United Kingdom

From Skelwith Bridge follow the footpath round Loughrigg Tarn to the Grasmere road and then take the footpath on the right to Loughrigg Terrace where you are rewarded with a panoramic view over Grasmere. There is a path down to the waterside but continue on the terrace down to the waterside path round Rydal Water. When you come to the road turn right and follow the road by the river until it turns sharply left at which point leave the road and climb up a steep path to the shoulder of Loughrigg whence the path goes all the way back down to Skelwith. The”Loughrigg Round” is an excellent half day’s walk.

Wansfell Pike

Reviewed By Zena3101 - Winchester, United Kingdom

We started from Ambleside and made a steep ascent from the High Street. Made a detour to see the waterfalls first, then onto to the proper climb. Lots of shaded areas, until we got to the gate which had the stone steps begin the mammoth climb all the way to Wansfell Pike. Do-able continuously (for us as reasonable fit people exercising 4-5x/week), but even we had to stop for 10s twice, so it is tough going up. But once reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with gorgeous stunning views of Lake Windemere, the town of Ambleside, and the panoramic view of everywhere else! We then headed towards Troutbeck tongue, but got lost halfway through, so took an alternatively route towards Troutbeck, stopped in at the Mortal Man pub (dog-friendly) for a cold pint, then continued on for another 5 km, before reaching back our BnB, via the Stagshaw gardens in the middle of nowhere! 17.8km, our feet sure felt it!

Rydal Mount & Gardens

Rydal Mount, the last family home of William Wordsworth from 1813 until his death in 1850, now belongs to the direct descendants of the Poet and remains a lived-in family home. The dining room, part of the old Tudor cottage, with its original flagged floor and oak beams, contrasts pleasingly with the larger proportions of the drawing room and library, added in 1750. The house contains works of art, furniture, manuscripts and many of the Poet's books and personal possessions, reflecting his life here. Wordsworth was a keen landscape gardener and the four acre garden remains very much as he designed it, consisting of fell-side terraces, lawns, rock pools and a 9th century Norse mound. There are rare shrubs and, in season, the daffodils, bluebells and rhododendrons produce a spectacular display.

Lovely visit; the tour guides are very friendly and the house itself has lots of information as you walk though it. The gardens are beautiful, so many little nooks and crannies to find and beautifully laid out. Would definitely recommend.

Do visit Brantwood - at any time of the year! It was too wet to visit the gardens but we had a leisurely visit of the house which held loads of interesting artefacts and information of historical interest, particularly as we had visited Blackwell earlier in the day and were able to make links between people, places and the ideology of the time. Set in an amazing location, which we didn't see the best of due to the poor weather, but would visit again to enjoy the gardens and the views across Coniston water.

Went for the weekend, our forth/fifth visit and will come back next year for a week. If you like walking and the outdoors there is plenty to. You don't have to go up the hills. A nice gentle walk is from Waterside, get the walkers ferry ticket and go over to Bray Castle, a 4 mile walk will take you to Ferry House. A small Ferry will then take you to Bowness. When finished, get the ferry back to Ambleside. Nice day out. If you book the ferry online, you save £1.20 per adult ticket. Just remember to pick up your ticket before boarding

Hill Top, Beatrix Potter's House

Hill Top was Beatrix Potter's most beloved place, packed full of her favourite things and left just as she wanted it for visitors to enjoy. You will see why she loved it so much and used it and the surrounding countryside as inspiration for many of her famous children's tales. Your visit helps the National Trust continue her work to look after the Lake District.

This is a small site set in beautiful scenery and about 10 mins walk from Hawkshead along a footpath following a stream. The facilities on this site were spotlessly clean and I would definitely use this site again.
