“Smena” Center of Contemporary Culture is an independent institution that started in Kazan in 2013. It regularly hosts exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, publishes books, and holds major city events. For seven years the team of the Center has been forming an extensive program consisting of educational, popular science, educational and cultural events — exhibitions of contemporary art, screening of documentary and feature films, meetings with authors, lectures, and discussions. “Smena” also initiates studies of urban space and local history subjects — later they are published as books or exhibited in the Center’s gallery. Besides, “Smena” is the only independent bookstore in the city. It represents new independent and niche publishing houses, books of the main intellectual publishing houses on art, children’s illustrated literature, and much more.
