The 10 Best Shopping in Grand Bazaar, Turkey

January 10, 2022 Janean Rudisill

The mosques, bazaars, and Turkish baths of Istanbul could keep you happily occupied for your entire trip: an eyeful of breathtaking architecture here, a good-natured haggle over a carpet there. Kick your trip off at the awe-inspiring Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque), which is visible from many points of the city. Stroll the Galata Bridge and stop by the Miniaturk Park to see its tiny artifacts. The Grand Bazaar has thousands of shops to browse, while the Egyptian Bazaar is a fragrant trove of spices and fruits.

I stopped by here as part of my final stay in Istanbul. After having read about the fine quality and craftsmanship of luxury leather goods, by a family owned label spanning three generations, I was not disappointed. From courtesy transportation, to assisting with my selections, fitting, and tailoring by a welcoming and knowledgeable staff (who also shared fantastic insight about the city), it is a truly first rate shopping experience. If you want to see and experience the best Istanbul has to offer, PRENS is a must on any shopping itinerary. Great location too- so much to see and do while you're having your purchases tailored.

Adnan and Hasan Carpet and Kilim Store

These were the most friendly, beautiful people. We learned so much. The selection is great, there is no (well, maybe just a tiny little bit) haggling and no pressure. They also have turned destroyed kilims/carpets into pillow cases. They are amazing and a great way to take a bit home with you if you can't afford a whole carpet. I also cannot say enough about the hospitality here, which is such a welcome relief in the crazy Wild Bazaar. We were looking for a particular item, which could not be found in the Bazaar. They drew us a map, called friends, who called friends and checked inventory, updated the map, and gave instructions and even a number to call if we got lost. Please stop here!

Iznik Works

Iznik Works' vast selection includes reproductions of Seljuk and Ottoman works, taking you on a journey back to the Iznik of old, with special pieces by ceramic artists including classical vases, plates and tiles. Also the pieces from matte, antiqued quartz; the quartz plates and vases look as if they have just come out of the ground.

We noticed the shop of Mr. Dursun among many others in Grand Bazar, because of his genuine hospitality and the quality of the products. While enjoying traditional Turkish tea, we had the privilege to learn about the history of Grand Bazar, and about how the shops were passed from generation to generation in his family. He spoke very proudly about it and it is fascinating how much hard work and effort he has put into making it the way it is today. Mr Dursun works with many local artists, that are producing these unique and beautiful pieces of art , none is the same with the other. We bought this beuatiful vase for Boris' mother. Mr Dursun also connected us to other merchants whom we could trust we buy quality for reasonable price ( Fabrics, spices, sweets ). Don't miss this unique Grand Bazar experience with Mr. Dursun!

Hakan Evin (Imperio Otomano): The very best place to buy beautiful handmade carpets in Istanbul. Highly recommend. Hakan is a very reputable carpet dealer, someone you can trust 100%. He is very knowledgable, professional and trustworthy. He will NEVER sell you an acrylic rug making you believe is pure silk! His carpets are all over the world. We purchased several carpets from Hakan when we were stationed in Istanbul. Love them all.

Misir Carsisi (Spice Market)

Spices, dried fruits, nuts and seeds are among the many treasures to be found at this bazaar also known as the Spice Market.

All your senses are engaged when you step in the Egyptian Bazaar (the actual name of the Spice Bazaar!). The smells of the herbs and sweets and soaps. The colours of the goods in display. The noise of the harassing and bargaining. Feeling the textiles with your fingers. Great experience
