Terra Mineralia

We invite you to see over 3.500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites from five continents presented in the historical setting of the Freudenstein Castle. At terra mineralia, a permanent exhibition of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the treasures of famous deposits in Asia, America, Africa, Australia and Europe are displayed on three floors. No matter how old you are or whether you are a scientist, a mineral collector or a tourist - the terra mineralia will amaze everyone. In KRÜGERHAUS, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, presents a permanent exhibition of minerals from German sources that crowns the terra mineralia exhibition in Freudenstein Castle. Next to the castle you can also visit the Mineralogical Collection Germany at the KRÜGERHAUS. Beautiful and fascinating treasures from Germany await visitors from near and far: Curls of silver from Freiberg, gems from the Vogtland region, petal-like pieces of barite from the Sauerland region, green pyromorphite from Bad Ems, raspberry coloured rhodochrosite from the Siegerland region, beautiful pyrolusite from the Black Forest, honey-golden fluorite from the Oberpfalz, big halite cubes from Thuringia and filigree gypsum crystals from Saxony-Anhalt.

Even though we had not reserved in advance (recommended because of coronavirus restrictions), we were able to enter the museum immediately (we were there at 12:30 PM on a Wednesday). The museum contains an incredible number of absolutely wonderful stones! There is a full floor for every continent and a final floor with the huge ones. Even though we are completely ignorant about mineralogy, we are able to fully appreciate the visit and were astonished by the beauty of what we were seeing! We bought a nice rock at the shop in the end for a very reasonable price.

Deutsches Museum

One of the world's largest science museums, visitors can to this famous institution can easily get lost among the endless floors of interesting exhibits, including a fascinating exhibit on mining.

Reviewed By duomo2 - Taunton, United Kingdom

This is the best museum I have ever visited, and I have been to many museums all over the world. It is massive, each section is huge and so detailed that you could literally get lost inside. We had 4.5 hours to spend here, which was nowhere near enough because we had to rush through in order to see everything (and we still had to skip loads of stuff). If I had known the museum was so vast I would have come a day earlier when I had the whole day free. Every section was big and full of things to see. The ship section had early diving suits, big ship models, a cut open submarine (the toilet was next to the missile!!), and a room that was made to look like you were on the deck of a cruise liner! There was actual equipment from ships that you can fiddle with, including a big life ring with trousers. There were detailed drawings of how ships are designed, with models of the different designs in a big tank that you can test out to see how they float and move. There was a room showing how different woods are chosen for ship building. It was so amazing and I don't even like ships! And that was just part of the basement! The best sections for us were the physics section, which had loads and loads of hands-on experiments to play with (my kids refused to leave!) and also the amazing mining section. I have been down two mines before, where they built museums around the mines and take people down to part of the mines to show you what it's like. I was shocked that in the Deutsche Museum they actually did the opposite, they made a mine in a museum! It was just like being in a real mine, the smells and the feel of the wind were exactly as I felt when I was down a real mine. Absolutely amazing! For us this museum was the highlight of our entire trip to Munich, we could have happily spent days in here. Instead of just using drawings to show you how things worked, this museum contains the actual machines and equipment that is used. (I now know how they used to drill the long hole into the centre of a cannon, using horsepower and gravity!) Brilliant, a must-see! I feel we must return to Munich in the future just to visit this museum!

Deutsches Hygiene-Museum

The Museum of Man. Just a stone's throw from Dresden's Frauenkirche, the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum invites visitors to experience people and their bodies. For over 100 years, the unique hands-on museum has been offering a look "under the skin". In addition, there are annually changing exhibitions on current topics from science, culture and society. The museum impresses both - from inside and from outside: Nowhere else in Dresden, the world-famous Bauhaus architecture can be experienced better.

Quite interesting both for kids and adults. We could carry out different experiments - it was funny and useful. Spent there several hours - weren't bored at all. Recommend to visit, ecpecially for families with children 8-14. The only problem people might have - the descriptions were in German, so if you aren't good enough in German, you may feel a bit confused.

Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost

Reviewed By 598saraha - Norwich, United Kingdom

A friend recommended Klimahaus so decided to visit with a different friend and it was the first visit for both of us. We both agreed that it was excellent value for money because there is so much to see and do and plenty of interactive exhibits. I was really interested in the exhibition about renewable energy and visiting the different climates was very good. There is a very good aquarium area as you walk through the climates and a lot of the information was available in English as well as German. It was fairly busy with school children when we arrived and the building is quite echoey so meant a lot of noise which was the only downside but can appreciate that it is the perfect place for school groups so this was to be expected. Overall really recommend this place, it has lots to offer, is easy to find and has parking right underneath.

experimenta - Das Science Center

experimenta, Germany's largest science center, amazes visitors with an extraordinary variety of offerings and is an exceptional symbol of the joy of experimentation, of knowledge and innovation. In the Discovery Worlds, numerous interactive stations on four exhibition levels are sources of inspiration. The Science Dome is a unique combination of planetarium and theater, where you can travel virtually through space or experience fascinating laser shows or experiment demonstrations. A space station of a special kind is located on the rooftop terrace: the observatory with its powerful telescopes and four observatory stations. The Research Worlds in building e2 provide areas for a wide range of experiments. They include eight high-quality and fully equipped labs, a cooking lab and the Northern Württemberg Student Research Center. experimenta offerings are rounded off with the Maker Space as a platform for design and development and as a workshop for hands-on work.

Zeiss-Planetarium

Reviewed By Peters188 - Amersham, United Kingdom

A well presented and informative show. Naturally all in German, but glad I could understand most of it. I liked the phrase “ Earth is an oasis of life in a huge void” Parking was not easy but found a place up the hill. Had a good meal in the restaurant but it was fairly slow.
