The Nickey Line Rail walk

Fabulous summer walk today along the Nickey line, along with several other paths and tracks that I couldn't name! The surface was hard and dry, the scenery excellent and the weather extremely kind. Already planning our next trek here!

Sculpture Trail

Reviewed By aramis - Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

The Sculpture Trail in Broxbourne Woods is one of my favourite walks, and I do it often. The woodland scenery varies throughout the seasons, and as well as the lifesize wooden sculptures there are other things to be seen, such as trees, colourful ferns, and occasional woodland animals. It was a warm October afternoon when I last walked the trail, and took more photos of the changing scenes. In the fenced off rough pasture adjacent to the sculpture trail, there were a number of English longhorn cows grazing. These are majestic beasts with long horns, and may look intimidating but they are gentle animals - but don't approach them directly or get too close. There are two separate car-parks, both free and unmanned, but do not leave valuables, or in fact any possessions on show. I've never had a problem, but why tempt thieves. You could walk the whole trail easily in less than hour, and it's clearly defined from the car-parks. I usually branch off onto other paths, but don't go too far off if you're not sure of your bearings. There are no toilets nor refreshment facilities, but these are available at the pub in the nearby village of Brickenden.

Greenway

The Letchworth greenway is a network of tracks circling the town of Letchworth along with other paths that you can walk, cycle or ride along. When I visited the paths were well maintained and there were a number of people making use of the facilities. Well worth visiting if you want a walk and you can go as far as you want.

Alban Way

Reviewed By therichastill - Stevenage, United Kingdom

The Alban Way was a former railway line from Hatfield to St Albans Abbey. I believe the line closed in the Sixties and has recently been restored so you can use it. I started on the route from Hatfield Galleria and the route is well signposted both as The Alban Way and Cycle Route 61. From the Galleria you go alongside the A1(M) for a short distance then through a housing estate and you arrive at Nast Hyde Halt which is a lovingly restored station with some memorabilia. There is also a playground nearby. Carrying on you pass into tranquil countryside then through Smallford and Hill End which still have their platforms in place and soon you come into the St Albans suburbs but you may not realise as you travel through tree lined avenues. There is also a platform at Salvation Army and London Road stations and there are information boards at all the former stations to give you a little history of the area. I walked along on a Saturday so it was quite busy with other walkers, runners and cyclists so be mindful of other users. I would definitely recommend visiting if you are a fan of railway history or scenic views.

I grew up playing this course. It’s long and will challenge the majority of golfers. Good 18 holes with an array of tactical shots thrown in for the pros but still offers a fun but challenging 100 for amateurs.
