This 190-mile scenic road winds its way through mountainous country, from Bairnsdale to Wangaratta.
The Great Alpine Road is a country tourist road in Victoria, Australia, running from Wangaratta in the north to Bairnsdale in the east, and passing through the Victorian Alps. The road is Australia's highest year-round accessible sealed road. It passes through lofty mountain ranges, plunging valleys, and past rolling vineyards along the way to the sparkling waterways on Gippsland's coast. So.. I joined the road at Wangaratta... got sidetracked because I needed cheese from Milawa and rejoined the road at Myrtleford... followed the road through to Bright, staying overnight at Bright...going over Hotham the next day. The road is so diverse... it's beautiful and there is a distinct difference from the Gippsland side to the High Country side. Both sides are appealing... the High Country is more populated, whereas Gippsland has vast areas that are not populated. It's an amazing drive to make... the only bit of any concern is the Mt Hotham bit... it's a bit hair-raising at times... it's a very long way down if you make a mistake.

This a bucket-list type of trip - but don't just visit the Twelve Apostles. See Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge (now an arch), The Arch, the Bay of Martyrs, the Bay of Islands and Childers Cove - as well as Bells Beach, Lorne and other stops on the way to Port Campbell. Also, add in visits to the Grampians and Ballarrat if you can.

driving beside the Snowy River always a pleasure view from one of the lookouts led to a walk of discovery to a beautiful if some tiny canyon carved in the granite over the millenia... iconic drive, took my Hasselblad down there and got some great shots

Gippsland's Premier Motor Museum - with changing of display theme every 4 months, around 60 stellar vehicles and 50 Motorcycles on display, along with much memorabilia.
Not being a car person my self, it was suggested to me to take a visit and wow, totally unexpected, way above my expectations, I was certainly not disappointed. The collection is very well laid out and the individual exhibits are themselves very interesting, many with a local flavor. The team running the collection are I understand volunteers only too keen to talk about any exhibit. I was told by one of the staff that the exhibitions are changed on a regular basis. Plenty to interest all the family. A covered picnic area outside. for visitors use. The GVC is a real credit to the community and the people involved.

I arranged this for my husbands 30th as a surprise and he absolutely loved it! They staff were super friendly and knowledgeable and he had such a good time. Easy location to find, the route that you get taken on is beautiful and it is right next to a distillery so can have a lovely lunch/drink afterwards! Price was quiet good value (I had done my research and this was the best price/deal) Will definitely be something that I would do again for gifts of any big milestones for family/friends! So worth it.
