Founded in the 12th century, Notre-Dame-de-Sénanque is a unique example of a Cistercian abbey and still an active monastery.
A beautiful place of full of atmosphere and tranquility. Better than the more publicised Musee de lavande. Here you get to experience the true lives led by the monks, and how they farm the surrounding expanse of lavender fields.

This building must have been originally a pagan temple dating from the 6th century . It has been rebuilt during the XI, XII, XIIIth centuries and restored during the XIXth century. The bishop was able to celebrate baptisms twice a year, the days before Easter and Whit Sunday. In this Gallo-Roman city of Venasque, a Christian community must have existed quite early. Indeed, we know of the existence of a small crypt situated under the choir of the actual church at the same level as the base of the baptistery. It might date back to the end of the 4th century. It is not surprising that the bishop, head of the local Christian community, settled in Venasque, choosing this hilltop fortress as a place of refuge. He was protected from the risks of invasion which constantly threatened Carpentras down in the plain below. In the vault of the northern apse, holes have been borne to improve the acoustics of the building. pieces of fine pottery would be inserted in the holes to improve resonance.

This 19th-century synagogue, built on the site of a much older one that had been destroyed by a fire, reflects the ancient roots of Jewish culture in Avignon.

I ducked in here to avoid the rain at the end of a long day and was captivated by this small church. It was the first church we had been in in France which had wood panelling lining the altar. I had admired its gold statue outside near the Palais des Papes but didn't go in from the square. I literally stumbled upon it while leaving the Rocher des Domes park. It was surprisingly simple inside and so beautiful. A very quiet place to chill out and admire.
