Kumano Kudo Kohechi Pilgrimage Trail

Reviewed By ymdsnow

We came off the Kumano Kudo Kohechi pilgrimage trail from a long day of hiking and were promptly picked up after contacting Nosegawa Onsen from a bus stop pay phone as instructed. Though the Onsen is a bit old and worn, our room was comfortable and clean. Cleaning up and bathing at the Onsen were wonderful treats after hiking all day. Meals were excellent, including one made especially for the vegetarian in our party.

Beautiful location, lovely service, excellent food

Reviewed By Nik R

We staid at Totsukawa Kanko Hotel Sansui for two nights, as a typhoon had interfered with or hiking plans. And retrospect that was not a bad thing. We had a spacious room with our own hot spring tub. The food was lovely and plentiful. The service was excellent, unobtrusive but always helpful. We were offered pick up from the bus station and rides to the starting points for a day hike and our eventual walk to Hongu. Hot spring facilities are beautiful, with two private baths and men's and women's in and outdoor baths available. The place is remote and quiet, practically no noisy international tourists, great to relax. English is not spoken, but my we got by great on Mandarin. And finally the price is quite fair given what is offered. Also compared with other onsen we've visited since.

The town is worth it, and the hotel is nice

Reviewed By mfragozo

We loved the food, dinner and breakfast was delicious and vast. The public bath was OK, and the rooms were big and comfortable. The staff was very nice, although nobody could speak English. It didn't matter, as we managed. Compared to other public baths, this was not as great.

Tub with a view!

Reviewed By SWKA

We visited during the Autumn when the trees were changing colours - this is a quiet time for Yoshino but well worthwhile - the mix of leaf colours and ancient temples was fantastic. It was so quiet we were the only visitors when we visited some of the oldest and most attractive temples. Hounkan Ryokan is located on Yoshino mountain, about 20 minutes walk (uphill) from the Yoshino Ropeway. The ryokan is easy to find and has a small car park (opposite and a few meters down the hill). The inn itself is relatively modern but is traditionally run with limited flexibility around eating times. The staff speak limited English but are very courteous and helpful. The reception also provides a written English language guide to the key facilities and activities available at the ryokan. We booked a room with an outside tub (highly recommended) and half board (breakfast and dinner). Our room was large with a small indoor terrace with views over Mount Yoshino. The view was fantastic especially from the (small) outdoor bath tub and separate bathroom. The room décor and furnishings were simple and traditional with a low table and cushions (with a backrest) during the day, replaced with large futons at night. The small terrace area also had two western style chairs, small table and fridge). It was a great place to relax at the end of the day. There are very pleasant onsen hot baths (two bathing areas alternating between males and females each day). The hotel provides everything you need for the baths, including robes and towels. The baths have all the shampoos and soaps you need. The food was excellent, half board is recommended as there are very few restaurants in the area at night, and you can also order wine, beer and sake with your meal. The meals are fixed menu with no choices, but you really don’t need choice as there are lots of dishes and some form of “cook your own” course (e.g. chicken on a grill or sukiyaki). The traditional breakfast was large and varied (but always included some form of grilled fish). The dining room setup was western style with tables and chairs. The highlight of this Ryokan is the opportunity to have a private bath tub overlooking the Yoshino mountainside. The round wooden bath is effectively outside as it sits on an open terrace with no windows obscuring you view, getting you as closed to nature as possible. Highly recommended.

Impeccable service and beautiful place with character

Reviewed By nugetz

Quaint and lovely place. There are lots of displays of old items and decorations that adds a lot of character to this place. The hotel is very clean and room is warm and lovely. The Onsen is great too. The best part is the wonderful service by the 2 ladies there. They are kind and friendly and very very helpful. When I asked for help to call a Minshuku to book my next place of stay, they took the initiative to find another one nearby when the one that I provided to them was unavailable. They also brought me to a nearby Okonomiyaki place for dinner and helped to inform the restaurant that I am vegetarian. Impeccable service! I would recommend this place to anyone!

Lovely stay with exceptionally warm family establishment

Reviewed By Marafat

We spent two nights as a party of six, spanning three generations. Accommodations were very comfortable and proper. The fact that the structure was not luxurious and impeccable meant it was more authentic and relaxed, making for a more pleasant experience compared to posher ryokans. And the food outshines more deluxe establishments: the dinners were impeccable and some dishes unforgettable. The water in this onsen is famous and terrifically tasty which must account for the taste of the food, but the very friendly cook --- the mum --- must be the genius behind the performance. The tall, elderly gentleman was exceedingly helpful and generous with his time though some knowledge of Japanese would probably be necessary to fully appreciate his tour of the village. He was excellent in guiding us to important spots in the Tenkawa area.

Very pleasant traditional accommodation

Reviewed By joelm185

Loved our stay here. Very comfortable traditional Japanese room, which was very warm and cosy when it was cold outside. The bathroom was heavenly after a day of hiking. The town was very quiet and closed in off season and the hotel was not able to offer dinner, however the hosts kindly drove us to a nearby simple restaurant which turned out to be great. The inluded breakfast was presented beautifully and brought to our room.

Great and recover stay

Reviewed By Phoenix Y

We stayed one night due to the tight schedule. But this is absolutely great place to stay at least 2 nights. I traveled with three elder parents to explore around this area by driving. This hotel has over 500 years history but it has a new block refurbished . And it does not really feels like 500 years old at all. Clean and nice place for get yourself recover. Delicious and all local ingredients. All staffs are very cordial and smiley. Highly recommended. If you want to experience some local japanese onsen stay, this is gonna be a perfect stay for you.
