Really hard to rate this one. I've been to many ryokan in Japan and usually rate them 4 or 5, Yoshidaya is somewhere around 3.5. As expected, service is excellent, from our arrival with the car, parking, check-in and welcome drinks and orientation. The design of the inn is wonderful, understated Japanese design mixed with modern elements. The attached bar and foot bath area is a nice touch, and the adjacent shop is very nice too. Now for the downsides... The dinner was a bit underwhelming compared to other ryokan I've been to. Served in a private dining room/booth it's not really a full-on kaiseki dinner, but rather hit and miss fusion style dishes. I expected a bit better. Breakfast however was good. There are several private baths that you can book (around 2000yen) but we stuck with the public ones. Slightly disappointed as none of the outdoor ones had any views - they are just in a back yard. They are smaller than most other ryokan I've been to. On the plus side, the water is terrific - creamy smooth, as Ureshino is famous for. And the baths were not busy at all, mostly empty in fact. The Japanese style room is also the smallest I've been to in a ryokan, and there is no bath in the room, just toilet and sink. All in all there may be better options in Ureshino, especially at this price point. I would encourage you to visit the cafe and shop, though - even try the tree house, which is a nice touch.

I stayed one night at the Japanese room. The hotel is beautifully located next to the river. The hotel is very huge and has a beautiful Japanese garden. The decoration and the facade of the hotel makes you feel like you stay at the museum. However, the sound proof is very bad. The wall is too thin maybe because it is made of wood. If you are a light sleeper, you may reconsider stay at this hotel. Also, although the hotel provides free wifi, I could only use it when I was at the lobby.

Stay in a room with private cypress bath. The room is big and cypress bath is ok. Hotel seems understaff and dinner is especially disappointing. There is a public onsen next door which provides meals and free onsen if you visit in yukata from the hotel.

Personal and friendly service, attention to details, excellent food and the tea onsen is wonderful. We stayed here as part of a tea study tour and enjoyed it fully. The Kaiseki meal was very nice. I will definitely stay here again next time.

Ureshino is a small onsen town located about 1 hour drive from Fukuoka. I parked my car at the car parking next to the hotel and the hotel staff rushed out to help carry my 2 pieces of luggage. And they are not light luggage. Once seated inside the lobby seating, the staff would formally welcome the guests with sweets and tea. It is a classic onsen hotel with new looks and feel. My classic room is a 15 tatami sized room which is very spacious. Inside the room there was a local specialty, a milk pudding waiting to be enjoyed. Outside the window there was so much greenery. The mini bar area has almost everything you need, dripping coffee, tea, hot water, ice water, and bottled water. The hotel provides guests with 45 minutes of complimentary use of a private onsen. And there are a few good private onsens to choose from. The main onsen is ordinary, more a modern style with tiles and lights, not particularly impressive. On the one side of the lobby, the hotel store mimics the Meiji era stores with lots of nostalgic merchandise. Dinner and breakfast were arranged in the restaurant, with each group of guests seated in a partitioned room. The waitress serving us spoke a little English and was helpful. Every item in the dinner was fantastic. The tofu pot in the breakfast was also exceptionally good. When we depart the hotel staff would pull your car to the hotel front door. Overall the service and food quality of the hotel is excellent.

Staff are friendly, love their private arita onsen, the tofu for breakfast was divine. The town is kind of small so you can easily walk around and check-out the nearby restaurants. Offer good value for money with the half board option. Though the carpet on the third floor is a bit tired.

At the end of March, my wife and I stayed in Ryokan 「Shoen」 in Ureshino Onsen (hot spring) in Saga Prefecture in northwest of Kyushu Japan for three nights. As their catch phrase indicates 「Shoen」 is really 「Flower and hospitality Ryokan」. This Ryokan (Japanese style Inn) is decorated with so many flowers inside and outside of Ryokan and back yard garden is real a work of art, it’s so beautiful setting and meticulously trimmed trees. OKAMI (landlady or lady manager), her husband (President) and all other staff members greeted us very welcome manner wherever we met them in the Ryokan. Food was just amazing. Two meals (breakfast and dinner) everyday were served in our room, the meals were brought in by a young lady (room maid) and she explained us all items on the table. Everything was so delicious and very beautiful presentation though one problem (only for us) was the amount of food was very big. (this is not complain at all). Ureshino Onsen (hot spring) is one of 3 best Onsen in Japan for the skin - - - to keep skin beautiful and smooth also to heal the injured skin quicker. In Ryokan, the cooled hot spring water was provided in a pot for the guests to drink, because Ureshino Onsen water is also good for the internal organs. Japan Rail (JR) trains don’t go through Ureshino Onsen. To access Ureshino Onsen, take JR train (JR Nagasaki Main Line) and get off at either TAKEO station or HIZEN KASHIMA station. The bus service to Ureshino Onsen from TAKEO or HIZEN KASHIMA is about 600~ 700 Yens. It takes only 5~7 minutes walk from Ureshino Onsen Bus Terminal to Ryokan 「Shoen」. If you have a large luggage, take a taxi - - - it’s about 4,000 Yens. If you are 2 ~ 3 people with large luggage, it worth to take taxi. We love 「Shoen」, we love to go back again and we can recommend this Ryokan 「Shoen」to anybody without hesitation.
