If you only have time to see one attraction in Charters Towers, do this tour. We just fluked it that we were to visit them on a Wednesday when they do their wagon tour. The owner is an Aussie but he seems to know more about the history of these cattle than the Texans do. The cattle here are direct descendants of the millions of Texas Longhorns that walked the great trail herds from Texas in the late 1800’s, and this is the home of the largest herd of these cattle in Australia. The tour of the farm was magnificent with Mick telling many a story along the way, some may have been true and others were definitely not. We started with smoko served from their authentic Chuck Wagon, consisting of billy tea and damper, backed up with Anzac biscuits and homemade Chocolate Texas Brownies. As there are no unrelated Texas Longhorn bulls in Australia, Mick’s wife Lynda went to vet school to learn how to artificially inseminate their cows. She showed us through their “Love Shack” and gave us a detailed description on how the process is done. They produce about 30 calves a year. The farm also has Asian Water Buffalo, American Bison, Scottish Highlanders and African Watusi. The highlight of the tour is the ride on their covered wagon, drawn by 2 Percheron draft horses which takes you down amongst the cattle. The pride of their herd is a steer called JR who made it into the 2013 Guiness Book of World Records for having the longest horns measured tip to tip of all cattle in the world. His horns are still growing and now measure more than 3 metres from tip to tip.

Had a lovely weekend here with my boyfriend. The staff and owners were friendly and made it an experience to remember. There were lots of activities to keep us busy, like mini-golf and archery indoors, as well as outdoor activities like bungee and trail rides. The animal nursery had a good mix of farm animals and pets and the food from the fun park was great. I was impressed by the array of things to suit everyone's tastes, age, ability and weather conditions. I'm looking forward to going on a camel ride and doing frisbee golf next time I'm there.

This was an amazing experience where it felt totally safe, the camels were really calm and sturdy and the Guide wash amazing! My family and I were lucky to be at the front where we got some interesting stories. For example, Australia introduced camels from Afganistan back in the 1800's and as we left them to roam after using them to move people and goods , there are hundreds of thousands of camels roaming Australia today! Or the fact that the dessert there was once used for target practice where you can still see evidence of bits of barbed wire in the sand, yet he was leading the camel pack in bare feet! There were lots more stories as well as some really interesting facts about camels as well! We visited during a weekend in early Sept with our 2 girls who were aged 3 and 10. We thought our 3 year old might freak out but she loved it where both girls still talk about the trip 1 month later! They are also Covid safe as the wipe down the helmets after each group and also have alcohol hand sanitizers for both before and after the rides. A highly memorable experience and one that is relatively affordable for the whole family at $35 per adult and $30 per child for 20 minutes. Highly recommended!

Visited the Big River Ranch with my husband and our two kids (21yrs and 16yrs). We went on a trail ride through bush trails and along the river, and even crossed through the river which was fun, and great on quite a warm day. Very nice scenery too. Our two guides were very competent and friendly and we all had a great time and enjoyable ride. Thanks also to our four beautiful horses who were all so well behaved!????

Curtin Springs

Open by appointment only. They say home is where the heart is, even if it is spread over a million acres of remote Central Australia! Curtin Springs has been home to the Severin family since 1956, when Peter Severin arrived with his young wife Dawn, their toddler son Ashley and 1,500 head of cattle. Curtin Springs stands as a testimony to the commitment of Peter and Ashley Severin to both the pastoral and tourism industries. At Curtin Springs we balance beef production with being a million acre wildlife corridor, and offer many ways for visitors to connect with the spectacular landscape. We invite you to take a ‘peek behind the curtain’ to explore the wonders of our home. Located just 100km east of Ayers Rock, Curtin Springs (the first Wayside Inn in Central Australia) offers a perfect base from which to visit the Ayers Rock and Kings Canyon areas. Or stay a while longer and ‘peel back the layers’ by including our experiences, tours and hospitality in your travel plans.

A great alternative to staying at overpriced Yulara (Ayers Rock township) - 80kms (45mins) back along Lasseter Highway - a million acre cattle station with the family creating a unique roadhouse - free camping - basic accommodation - we (4 of us) stayed in a two bedroom unit - clean, aircon, own shower/toilet and very adequate. The dinner outside under some tree boughs was excellent and moderately priced. Staff were friendly and welcoming. There are aviaries out the back with a variety of birds. Unfortunately we did not have time to view the paper making. We would highly recommend Curtin Springs to others.
