Best known as the birthplace of St. Francis, Italy's patron saint, Assisi lies amid Umbria's rolling hills. Religious pilgrims have come here for centuries to visit the Basilica of San Francesco (where St. Francis is buried) and the Basilica of Santa Chiara (to see the tomb of St. Clare). Visit the Eremo delle Carceri to see caves where medieval hermits withdrew from the world. (You may find such solitude quite appealing—especially if you're here on a daytrip from Rome!)

Above all, Santa Maria degli Ancillotti is suited to couples who would like to be in a friendly family-run hotel where service is of the utmost importance. Santa Maria degli Ancillotti is set in 4 hectares of parkland, protected by trees and well-tended hedges. The buildings, which date back to 1179, were renovated by the owner with the aim of creating a peaceful retreat for guests seeking privacy and tranquility. There are 7 spacious suites fully renovated in April 2014, with every comfort: individually controlled air conditioning and heating, satellite TV, direct line telephone, free mini-bar, safe, kettle and hairdryer, beach towel for the swimming pool, and an external area with table and chairs. Originally planned as apartments, the spaces are now occupied by suites which comprise a double room with double bed or two twin beds depending on your requirements, and a spacious wardrobe. The living room is large and bright with a sofa which quickly transforms into two single beds. The bathroom has a large and modern shower.
... and it is called Santa Maria Degli Ancillotti. This was our 4th stay in Santa Maria Degli Ancillotti, and again a fantastic experience. The beautiful location, spacious and perfectly cleaned rooms (with good wifi and airconditioning !), large swimming pool with comfortable sunbeds and large umbrellas and a large garden full of olive trees create a relaxing atmosphere where you really feel at home. All of this perfectly combined with high quality service and attention to detail. And last but not least ... dinner ! Fresh quality ingredients, prepared with passion and love (thank you again Inez, Susie and "mammie" !!!) and served by Alessio with a big smile. What else would one want ? Of course, a good bottle of wine. No problem. The wine list has more than enough possibilities. A unique combination which so far we have not found anywhere else, making Santa Maria Degli Ancillotti heaven on earth.

We've just spent three glorious days at Relais Parco del Subasio and can thoroughly recommend it. The location is beautiful and the accommodation is very clean and comfortable. The owners are very helpful and the breakfast is excellent.

What a lovely place, with a warm welcome. The room was fresh and clean. Plenty of towels and spotless bed linen. Kitchenette adequate for producing basic meals, once again it was very clean. as was the lovely pool. Not much english spoken (why should they in Italy) however all the staff were very willing to help us. Our stay was bed and breakfast, the views of the mountains and Asissi were a spectacular back drop whilst eating our first meal of the day. Sylvianna and all of her staff could not have worked harder to keep Il Casale di Monica the beautiful place that it is. We visited Asissi, Spello and Lago Trasimeno all amazing places with magnificent views. Thank you all for making our holiday so memorable, by being such perfect hosts. Barbara & Scott

La Padronale del Rivo is a hotel/country house with swimming pool and restaurant located in a charming location in Rivotorto of Assisi. The property is located only 3 km from Assisi, 2 km from the center of events, conferences Umbriafiere, 1 km from the Lyric Theater and the Pala Events Assisi, but is also found on the slopes of Mount Subasio (ideal place for outdoor walks, excursions, hang gliding and paragliding) from the top of which you have a beautiful panoramic view of Umbria and its cities Perugia, Spello, Foligno, Trevi, Montefalco, Bettona. La Padronale del Rivo is open in summer and winter, in hot weather you can enjoy both the garden always taken care that the refreshing pleasure of a swimming pool never too crowded with lounge chairs and wooden structures with shade Jacuzzi and sun in water. In winter, the hotel evokes a family atmosphere, ideal as a support for those who love excursions, pilgrimages, or those who just want to see natural landscapes and historical wonders.
Truly one of the best trips I've ever been on and I owe it to the owner of this hotel. He, his father, and their staff are the most authentic people you will meet. They go above and beyond to make sure your stay is as welcoming and inviting as possible. This hotel doesn't have a fitness center, spa, or those types of amenities you might come to expect. The rooms are on the smaller side if you're looking for space, however the rooms are very clean, tidy, and staff is super friendly. Rooms have everything you expect. Air conditioning is powerful and takes care of those very hot days and nights. Wifi is free and better than some hotel Wifi. Good signal. Plus, you're not there to spend time in your room anyway. You're going to be spending it in beautiful Assisi only a mere 4 minute drive away. Or out exploring the Umbrian countryside and visiting small towns along the way like Spello a few kilometers from the hotel. Or at the hotel pool listening to great music, enjoying a refreshing beverage, and chatting up the owner and/or his father bartending at the pool bar. Or you'll be in the hotel dining room for lunch and dinner eating one of the best meals you will have on your trip. You get the point. Speaking of the food. The food served at the hotel was the best food I had in my time in Umbria. I had truly authentic, delicious, and memorable food in Assisi and Spello, however none of those meals were as delcision and memorable as the food the hotel serves. For me, the food served at lunch and dinner was the best I've had in Italy. And I've been to Italy 8 or 9 times now in the past 5 years. The owner told us he only has two chefs and they get to decide what two meals they want to serve for lunch and dinner. It makes it easy to decide and what you get served is the food you dream about eating in Italy. Warning, you will be very full. The portion size for these courses are essentially full meals. You will eat a lot and you will be happy. FYI, get the tiramisu and thank yourself later. Wine, 1st course, wine, 2nd course, wine, dessert, digestivo. Rinse and repeat. The pool is wonderful and where everyone seems to congregate. Even those not staying at the hotel, which you might think of as a bad thing, however it added to the fantastic vibe this hotel has. Even if you don't stay at this hotel, you can still visit the pool. I believe the early bird/happy hour price is 7 euros to gain access and it also gets you a drink! All other times it's 10 euros plus a drink. Either way, a great deal. They have plenty of pool chairs in case the pool is crowded so don't worry too much about getting to the pool early. The pool is bigger than you would think and is great for adults, kids, and families. It's a great mix. This hotel is the perfect location for those who want to stay a little off the beaten path, however close enough to see the path. Rent a car or scooter and explore the surrounding area. The location could not be any better. It's actually directly across the street from the monestary where St. Francis of Assisi lived. Church isn't that old, however they built around the place where St. Francis lived and it stands as the first thing you see when you enter the church. Very cool. All in all, it's the owner, his father, and their staff that really make this hotel what it is. They're authentic people who have your best interests in mind and go out of their way to make your trip a memorable one. From recommendations, to tips, to information and stories about the hotel and surrounding area, you're in great hands. The hotel itself serves its purpose admirably. It's a 3 star hotel that punches well above it's weight class. The value you get here goes so much farther than you will realize. You just have to experience it. This is the perfect hotel for friends Even if you decide this hotel doesn't meet all your needs, I implore you to at least visit to enjoy the pool or enjoy a great Italian meal and dessert. Cheers to Michele, Mauricio, and the La Padronale del Rivo staff! You have earned yourself another new, loyal customer. I am very grateful for your hospitality!

My elderly mother and two sisters and I spent three lovely nights at Malvarina. The scenic and peaceful setting of this family owned and operated inn high up on the mountainside was delightful. We stayed near the end of the season when leaves were beginning to fall and the evening air was crisp. The spectacularly beautiful city of Assisi was an easy drive from Malvarina, and our host, Giacamo, helped us plan our trip. Without exception, we found the hosts and staff at Malvarina to be warm and welcoming. The cooking class with Patricia and Lilliana (and Pepe as translator) was outstanding and added depth to our experience of the region. My sisters and I stayed in one of Malvarina's apartments on the edge of the property which was well appointed with a small kitchen and outdoor seating. The main bed (double) was comfortable but the two twin beds in which my sister and I slept were not, and we would probably have been better off with single rooms for all three of us. But staying together was part of the fun, so we adapted. We loved everything else about Malvarina, from the dogs at the window of the breakfast room to the star-filled night sky and views of the valley below. We will return to Malvarina, without a doubt.

Casa Vacanze Roberta situated in Rivotorto, a quiet village just 2 km from Assisi. Our hotel is decorated in a simple and comfortable, is composed of 3 double bedrooms, two of which there is a third bed, for a total of 8 beds. The kitchen is fully equipped will allow you to prepare meals to be enjoyed on the large terrace of 25 sqm. The bathroom has a tub. The property is ideal for families and groups of friends.
Very nice building! Three is of floor outstanding away. It is worth the time and doesn not bring along watch. I do not really fit the Franciscans. Much nicer and grander. It's not like St. Francis. You do not have to pay admission. Demonstrate the frescoes of St. Francis's life. You can be interpreted as when you first go into the inmost, right here we go. Then we move towards the door, and then we turn to the left frescoes.

Finally TA has added Agriturismo Longetti to the database! Pig farm just outside Assisi run by a little family that also raises olives and makes honey. They added on to their old stone house a few guest rooms, which are located kind of next door to the pig house. From outside your rooms, you can hear the pigs and even smell them. So don't spend a lot of time on that side of the house. Spend time in Assisi and travelling the countryside and eating porkchops and steak in the dining room where Mrs. Longetti's cooking will sear into your mind what a grigliatta is supposed to be. Wow! Unforgettable meals. Yeah, you can just eat dinner there, and stay someplace nicer, but the price was fair, and the old man was so charming with his explanations of farm life. Nobody there spoke any English, but it was a heckofalotof fun to stay there. I give "service" very good instead of "excellent" because, well, you don't speak Italian, they don't understand what you want. But they try.

We turned up on spec during our travels in Umbria in September this year. We were out of luck for a room in the main house but the proprietor took us to the apartments down the drive way over looking the olive groves. The apartments were basic but clean and suited us just fine for the night. Breakfast was very much a family affair in the breakfast / dining room overlooking the valley. I would stay here again.

Abbiamo scelto questo b&b in occasione di una fiera che si svolgeva a Bastia Umbra, molto facile da trovare e non molto distante da Assisi, siamo stati accolto dal sig. Filippo in modo molto cordiale e gentile... La stanza era molto confortevole. Colazione al mattino molto abbondante. Bellissima la veduta del panorama
