Train Street

Despite most of the train street around Hanoi is closing down for travelers to visit, bunches of guardians on the both side of the entrances but somehow with the locals secret way, we still can get into the sight of 222 Le Duan street along the Center train station. If there's any trouble to get in you just need to contact a lovely and full of kindness coffee shop owner inside the train street named Linh by the phone number + 8493 4050191 ( ok with whatsapp ), she will take you in by her secret way. Hope fully everyone can have a wonderful and "shouldn't missing out the unique experience" as we did following the local helps.

Was great! Left at 8pm and arrived 0930. Cost $100AUD but worth it. Pretty comfortable sleep actually. Share toilet but quite ok. Four beers, four soft drinks, four croissants, four cups for coffee/tea in our cabin when we arrived. Breakfast (pastry) was brought around just after 8am. Highly recommended.

Long Bien Railway Station

Since the Hanoi Train Street was closed, this area become more popular to locals and tourist for Instagram pictures taking ... it is a different feel here as compare with Hanoi Train Street as u get to walk on the bridge railway track which can be quite a risk if u r not careful and feel through the hole, u will land at least 20 meters down below on the road with moving traffic. the metal constructions on the bridge make it attractive for picture takings. This is a live railway track as trains from other cities will pass by here to Hanoi Train Station. The train station looks newly built as compare with some old pictures of the station. It's worth a visit when in Hanoi.

Vietnam Railways

I do love train travel. It’s more sustainable than flying and really forces you to slow down and take things at a slower pace. We took two trains during our stay in Vietnam - from Ho Chi Minh to Da Nang and then from Da Nang to Hanoi. Both were around the same travel time and both left on time and arrived early. I travelled with my 75yo mother and 6yo son (yes I’m insane) and both coped with the trip easily (mum needed a hand getting on and off the train in Da Nang as there isn’t really a platform. We booked a soft sleeper cabin. For the first left we had another person in there and for the second leg we had it to ourselves. I slept well on both legs. I’m a light sleeper. It’s noisy. You can turn the train announcements off (they’re all in Vietnamese so nothing lost there) and there are window shades go keep outside light out. I slept with earplugs and wasn’t disturbed too much when the train stopped at stations to let people in and off. The toilets aren’t as bad as people make out. If you’ve travelled through Asia, you’ll know what to expect. Take your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer and you’ll be fine. There’s a separate hand basin outside the toilet which is handy for brushing teeth etc. Food comes through fairly regularly - hot and pre-packed. First trip we had a beef stir fry with rice and veg and then a mixed plate with some curry, rice, tofu, veg for dinner. Both were cheap and tasty. The coffee in the morning is strong and hot but there’s no milk (they’d run out by the time they got to us). There is so much to see on the train trip. The trains are reliable and the ticketing system is easy. Compared to other countries, this is an awesome option. I’d do it again for sure.

Orient Express Train Hanoi – Sapa

Reviewed By Davenzl1 - Auckland Central, New Zealand

I love train travel, and I've travelled in a sleeper car in Vietnam before. But this was a really nice experience. the inside of the carriage was nice, with a toilet at each end of the carriage. But the cabin was beautiful, with nice dark timber panelling, power points, nice lighting, and enough space. Don't expect it to be a smooth ride all the way though. It's an experience :)
