The 10 Best Points of Interest & Landmarks in Yorkshire, England

August 3, 2021 Augustus Redeker

Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər, -ʃɪər/; abbreviated Yorks), formally known as the County of York, is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.

On a trip to Ripon a visit to see the hornblower is a must. At 9p.m for 365 days of the year for well over a thousand years, the hornblower has blown his horn in the market square to proclaim all is well. The hornblower then gives an interesting and informative talk about the history of this daily event and is happy to answer any questions. It takes approx. 30 minutes and is time well spent.

The Piece Hall

Following a multi-million pound transformation project, Britain's last surviving cloth hall, featuring independent shops, cafes and bars, heritage visitor centre, art gallery and a spectacular events programme is now open seven days a week.

First visit to Halifax as a tourist and the day centred around the Piece Hall. What a wonderful day out and very much recommended to all. Impressive architecture, full of history. Made to feel very welcome by the good people of Halifax with plenty to see and do. We joined a free tour of the Piece Hall and our guide Pamela did a truly superb job of bringing the history to life and showing us around. The work that has been done to restore the Piece Hall is world class. There's great independant shops to visit and several very pleasant places to eat and drink including Gin Lane where we enjoyed a special Espresso Martini and Elder that provided a superb lunch which included catering perfectly for my gluten free dietry needs. Hope to visit again soon!

Sheffield Manor Lodge is the perfect place to enjoy time with family and friends. Discover the manor which held Mary, Queen of Scots prisoner, join in a petting session on our farm, wander through beautiful wildflower meadows and stop for a tasty treat at the Rhubarb Shed Cafe. Please note we are open every Sunday April to September.

As a resident of Sheffield the Manor Top was the last place i expected to find such a historic place of beauty. There is an educational experience for the kids, but also beauty in the history and how well the area was maintained. There is a lovely cafe insight, plus a few farm animals and they were also working on a 1940's experience when we visited which looked very interesting as a few houses were being renovated to offer a war time experience. Definitely worth a visit, onsite parking is available and you can spend a good few hours here, we'll be returning once again in the summer.

If you are passing through or staying at beautiful Saltburn, pause for a moment and take in the beauty of a stroll along the pier whilst watching those brave surfers catch a wave or two! Look out for the mark of the knitters who are celebrating the Pier’s 150th Birthday and look up towards the cliff cab which will take you onwards and upwards if your legs can’t carry you back up the hill into town. .... Gorgeous sunsets this week, and wonderful friendly folk! Very impressed with the town promoting everyone to talk two minutes of their day and pick up any plastic from the beach... & people were taking time out to support x
