I've seen many pigeon houses (and excavated one!), but none anywhere near as impressive as this. It was designed to house some 4000 pigeons for collecting both the eggs and the guano. The pigeon boxes are arranged on transverse vanes extending from the central space to an outer ring of pigeon boxes. The only entrance for the pigeons was through an opening in the top of the tower. For those charged with managing the collection of guano etc, thin discs of alabaster were let into the 1st storey floor to allow light to enter the ground floor. A brilliant and remarkable structure beautifully restored.

The Jame Mosque or the Congregational Mosque is one of the oldest monuments of the Islamic era in Yazd. An imposing entrance (the tallest of all mosques in Iran) topped by two minarets that dominate the old city. Much of the history of The Mosque dates back to Mongolian times in the 14th century. The monument has been restored several times. The last works were carried out between 1954 and 1986. The reputation of the mosque is due to its Persian blue tiles, its mosaics with various floral and geometric patterns, or its fine ornamentation in brick and terracotta. The water is channeled through a qanat, accessed by a staircase to perform ablution before prayer. jame-mosque-yazd

On your way from Shiraz to Yazd, a quick stop in Abarkuh is highly recommended. There you'll find the famous "Cypress of Abarkuh", whose age is estimated between 4000 and 5000 years and may be one of the oldest living trees in the whole world! Its height is about 25m and its perimeter, at the trunk, is around 11,5m. The legend says that Zoroaster, the Iranian prophet and spiritual leader, planted himself the ancient tree. Amazing legends about this Iranian protected national natural monument ... "Coffee Art Gallery" is located right under the shadows of the iconic "Cypress of Abarkuh", serving freshly brewed coffee, home baked cakes and traditional Iranian souvenirs. One last remark: never visit the "Cypress of Abarkuh" after sunset, as you'll see almost nothing. Enjoy!

This Yakhchal has conical shape, which is made of clay. and its height is 20 meters. The downward diameter is almost 10 meters, there is also a hole drilled in its floor to the depth of 2 to 3 m. About 100 years ago, when climate change was not drastic and the heavy snowfall was common, people gathered and stored the snow in these Yakhchals to use it in summer and spring.
I had never heard of ice houses in Iran, so we were greatly surprised to see one in Abarqu. Of course, having seen one, we saw many more along our travels. They are beautiful, conical structures resembling bottle kilns used to fire ceramics, and you can enter this one. A true marvel.

This was one of the most interesting finds of our travels through Iran on the road to Yazd...an ice house in the desert. The process to create the ice in this dry area for caravans moving through was quite remarkable and then store it in this massive adobe brick chamber ingenious. Centuries old technology that would still work more efficiently than today. This area is well maintained and interesting. Well worth a visit.
