Somaro

Dating back over 200 years to the Edo Period, Somaro is a maiko teahouse and museum in the northern port city of Sakata. It is one of the very few places outside of Kyoto where geisha culture can be enjoyed. Originally called Soma-ya, Somaro's geisha culture was brought up to Northern Japan through the thriving trade ties that once existed between Kyoto and Sakata. During that time, Somaro served as an entertainment destination and exquisite restaurant for the many merchants and shipping agents who shuffled through this city. Beautifully restored in 2000, Somaro is a museum and maiko dance house that preserves and showcases the splendor of Sakata's geisha culture.

Jizogura

It was here that 1200 years ago a Buddhist mountain ascetic took a deadly fall from a nearby peak. On the way down, he broke his elbow, but also happened to tumble into one of the warm natural pools bubbling up around the Dozan River. As the legend goes, his wounds we’re instantaneously healed by the waters. Ever since, Hijiori Onsen has become not only a site for wounded patrons seeking respite for their various ailments, but also a holy pilgrimage for worshippers of the venerable Jizo-sama, that long ago monk’s cherished bodhisattva.

Ginzan Onsen

Reviewed By iamsenhongkong - Hong Kong, China

Adorable and charming onsen place; a must go if u are in yamagata area. Try to go early in the day and enjoy a stroll in the town and onsen at night. Amazing view when it's covered in snow during winter. We booked a taxi for half a day to take us around to Mogami river and then to train station - highly recommend taking this route. We do not speak japanese but we can communicate easily with google translate. Save us the hassle of managing the luggage and waiting for public transport under heavy snow. Highly recommend esp if you are travelling with elderly and kids.
